The marvelousness of hermit crabs. :)

We have started taking one of our hermit crabs to OT/ST. DS will play with it as soon as we transition into the room. Then he'll put it down for it to crawl away while he works with the OT or ST. When he's tired of working, the OT will say, "Where's your crab?" and DS will search for it, hold it for a minute, put it down and watch it walk away. Then he can get back to work.

He's visually defensive so that little "check out" time to search for the crab and then a minute or two of closely examining it enables him to get back on track.

I do have to wonder what the poor crab thought when we held him on "The Vestibulator" swing yesterday. I really had that thing swinging!!
I was on the swing, DS was in front of me braced between my legs and he clutched his crab.

I just can't believe how much of a difference one tiny animal can make. I'm spoiling the heck out of these crabs. They must live forever!!

Wow, whoda thunk it?
That's really awesome, and I really like the way your therapist thinks.

We added two more to our family today. We need to rotate them at therapy more.

Well, not really. They do need daily exercise out or they get "depressed" evidently. I'm just shocked by how personable they are. We have grumpy hermit crabs that will pinch. We have grabs that I'm pretty sure you leave on your naughty bits for a day and they wouldn't pinch. We have a shy one that refuses to come out when it sees us but zooms around the room like a maniac if we hide.

They do love to be in groups. Hermit crabs hate to be alone. Hence our five so far. They'll be more I'm sure.

They like you to build them obstacles courses for climbing. We use Mega Blocks. They take a nightly bath in the tub after the kids at night.

They are mostly nocturnal so there's a lot of scrabbling noise late at night. They crack me up on my insomniac nights when I'm web surfing SPD.

www.fmrpets.com is the distributor where we get our crabs. I did get rid of our crappy plastic container for one of their big cages and the crabs LOVE climbing which delights DS to no end.

I've turned two friends onto hermies since we got ours and we get them all together for play dates.

I had moon crabs a few years back. Stinky but cute.
