Nov. 27, 2006 issue - With the Democrats in control of Congress, some activists are hoping they'll add a controversial issue to their to-do list: revisiting the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military. Gay servicemembers have sought a policy change for years. Now, says Steve Ralls, spokesman for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, gay vets hope they might make some progress at a time when the military can't afford to turn away the willing and able. Last year the Pentagon discharged 742 service members for homosexuality, according to SLDN.
I really hope they change this.

It was a Democrat (Clinton) who signed off on DADT. I don't have much hope for the Dems (many being moderates and conservatives) getting rid of it anytime soon.

I know--I thought that was a big failing on Clinton's part. He talked about equality in the military and then caved. Seemed to me that it was better than before but not actually decent.

I have to agree with this.

I was very disappointed when DADT was implimented, but it was rather "progressive" for the early 90s. Now, lets hope the military is willing/ready to be honest with themselves and acknowledge the contributions of non-heterosexual service members.

I was going through my boxes of junk from my childhood recently (trying to get rid of stuff), and I came across Clinton's response to my very angry letter to him about DADT. I think that's the only response I've ever gotten from a President! But, yeah, I was incredibly angry with him about that one.

It was probably a form letter - nothing especially interesting in any case. I just thought it was cool to get a letter from the White House - especially since I was in high school at the time.

I'd share it with you, but it's in a box in the closet, under a bunch of other boxes, and there's no way I'm pulling all of those out again!
: They're staying there until we move, or until I'm finally able to put together a scrapbook about my own life instead of everyone else's!
