I understand about not wanting to disinclude LCs, but the original forum title currently does not include breastfeeding professionals at all. Like it was mentioned before, many hang out on the breastfeeding board.

I guess I like "birth professionals," but I am truly not loving any of the suggestions.

My suggestion would be "With Women."

Hi ladies,

I am pretty new here, but I am going to go out on a limb--This may be an unpopular opinion, but for ease of use, I would vote for separate forums for birth workers/professionals or whatever we are! I do like being a part of a community forum with doulas, CBEs, and everyone, but in all likelyhood I would probably use the forums more, read more, and post more if the topics were more streamlined, e.g., a doula forum, CBE forum, midwife forum. I have dial-up, and this may be part of it, but it can take forever to sort through the topics. I don't get a whole lot of free time on the internet, so when I'm here I prefer to get to the topics most relevant to my practice and my interests. Sorry if this comes across as self-serving!

Warmly,
Erin

Hi Erin!

It's a fine suggestion, and not self-serving at all (or if it is, that's ok ), but splitting this forum further is not in the cards right now.

elrio, I can kinda see what you're saying, but I think that'd make people miss out on a lot. For example, a question about pushing could be answered by a doula, midwife, or a CCE.

I have another vote for birth professionals.

Birth practictioners in my mind include midwives and doctors, but I don't think it would include doulas or CBEs. Maybe its just me.

Speaking entirely personally, taking off my mod hat, I dislike Birth Practitioners just because the pregnant women are the ones "practicing" the art of birth, not the midwives etc.

puts mod hat back on I'll see about getting a poll up with all the suggestions, but it looks right now like Birth Professionals is most popular, although there are some legitimate concerns about it. I'm afraid there will be no "perfect" title that makes everyone happy, alas.

I was thinking about the Professional aspect of it as well. I would hate for someone to think this is advice they can take IN PLACE OF what their care provider says. Hopefully there wouldn't be any problems with some random person stumbling here and taking the advice without seeking help from a IRL medical professional.

I personally don't like the Birth Professionals.
I voted Birth Workers and With Women. I think I actually like "With Women" better but that doesn't explain what the forum is, kwim?

I think most of us who could be liable in a situation like that think about it every time we post to those kind of questions, if we choose to post to them.

hrm, i'm torn. i love "with women" because it really describes the role of midwives, doulas, cbes, lcs, etc., but it's not really all that descriptive when you're just scanning the forum list. thus, i lean more towards "pregnancy, birth and postpartm professionals" because that makes it nice and apparent.

I like Birth Professionals. Birth Workers is good, but it reminds me so much of "sex workers".

Oh, and I think it's super cool and nifty that you're asking for opinions before changing it!

This is a difficult decision! I don't know. I'm torn between birth workers and birth professionals.

IMO, a LC and a pp doula are birth professionals/workers too.

I don't care for Birth Junkies (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone). I am a Doula and a Birth Professional. We have a difficult enough time as it is with uneducated people thinking we are a bit strange. I vote for keep it as it is.

Haven't made it through replies yet....

I don't know what to change it to but if I saw "birth professionals" I might only think of midwives and doctors, if I were just a lay person who had limited knowledge of such things. I think that's why I like what it is currently... I'll go read replies now...

Okay... I hate to point out the obvious but: If part of the intention is to shorten the title, you won't be doing so with "Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Professionals" as it is the exact same length as the current title (though I admit I like the sound of "Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum Professionals" better) And I still hold what I said about seeing "professionals" and most people not thinking of doulas, CBEs, etc etc Tricky, tricky

Yes, I see what you mean. Like I said, my suggestion is based on what I think would be a more user-friendly format for me (what would get me using the forum more). I do recognize that folks with birth questions would have to decide between posting on a doula or midwife, or CBE forum.

What about "Birth Attendants" or "Birth Attendants and Educators" ??
