I took the kids to the library today, all of them, by myself. They just built a nice children's area and they have their own librarian. She actually told my kids NOT to touch the book unless they were going to check them out. I was
! How are they suppose to know they want to check it out unless they get a peek first!

Seems like every time we are in there she has something ugly to say to my kids. I have reported her several times, but apparently it is useless. Yeah, the kids are a little crazy while we are there, but only because they are excited. I think I am going to show up at least once a week instead of every 2 weeks or so, just to piss her off. lol

I think she thought she was going to get a break during the school year. She has signs up all over the children's section say they will call the police if children are there during school hours.

I wonder that too. I just just to heck w/ it and go anyways. I figure I'm not doing anything illegal, let them call the police. Then everyone can get a lesson about homeschooling and jumping to conclusions. What is even funnier is their web site has a link for homeschoolers.

:LOL Don't touch the books? Good grief!!! I'd probably go around MYSELF and start pulling books off just to piss her off.

That's one of my biggest pet peeves....rude librarians in the children's room! We have one too..not this bad tho..who NEVER talks to the kids. WTF?

I would lodge a complaint with her supervisor, and say that she is creating a hostile learning environment for your children. I'm shocked about the signs. And even if a child *was* truant, ummm, wouldn't it be great that the decided to go hang out at the library? I know my youngest brother certainly wasn't doing that when he skipped school!

I worked on a service project with librarians. I found most of them are into control. They must have their rules followed! Keep reporting her. Maybe one day you will get someone in the right mood to kick her back in line.

Jeepers. That's unbelievable...no touching unless you're taking it home? What are these, porno mags in a convenience store???

And I spent many hours in the library next door to my junior high school skipping classes. As someone said, there are worse things. Oh, but they might touch the books...

So, you need to have your kids check out every book they remove from the shelf, then let them return the ones they don't actually want to take home before they leave the library.

I have to weigh in on this one. This librarian is probably one of the old school folks that think the books should be clean and untouched. Fine for an adult librarian, but as a children's librarian, I can say that we are not all that way and there are some of us who delight in seeing kids actually use the books.

Maybe I'm a sicko, but I like when the books come up with pages missing and soforth. That says to me that kids are loving them and using them to their fullest.

And taz925, we are not all control freaks. A lot of old school librarians are really into order and can't take it when things go even slightly away from planned.

Today she probably thought I was!

Really my kids were not being obnoxious or rude, just being kids. They love the library. Sometimes they just want to find out one or two facts, read what they want there, no need to bring it home. I let them each choose 3 books and sometimes it is a hard choice for them.

We always make sure to leave the books we don't check out on the restocking cart. The older girls are teaching the little ones to do the same. I really don't see that the kids are being a distraction, not to mention we were the ONLY people in the children's section. Oh, I guess the squeal of delight from my 9 yr old finding her favorite book is not allowed.

OH and I did think about taking a bunch of books off the shelf and just leaving them all over the place. But decided it wasn't a great lesson to teach the kids.

wow. we have such great libraries here. adn the one I grew up with is even better. we go and read stacks of books at the library and then only take home a few. this is encouraged!! and we are instructed to leave the ooks on the tables and not put them away (they don't mind if we put the bin books away since they are in no specific order besides what goes in that bin - word bird, disney, mercer mayor, seuse etc).

that librarian is awful. I am extremely non-confrontational but this is where I would have to cross that line and challenege her outright on every stupid rule. is there another library you can go to. what a drag.

wow. i'm so shocked! it would be totally abnormal for my kids to go to the library and politely only pull off the books they plan to check out. haha - nope, we gotta thumb through them and see if they seem interesting and then take them home. i'm very grateful now, we have very relaxed librarians who don't mind my kids antics (we do leave when they get to rowdy and loud though). i'd be upset for sure!

To whom have you reported her? The library director?
