I had a lactation consultant and a LLL leader come out to my house to try and help me with nursing. The only problem there is right now is that when he sucks he sucks in his bottom lip. He does it when he sleeps & sucks his thumb, too. When they came over I showed them what I am doing to try and get him to stop and they both told me I am doing all I can. So, I guess there is no fix? Do I just wait until he gets bigger and his mouth gets bigger? It sure is taking a toll on my nips.

I do all the ol' tricks, and even when he opens wide, as soon as he gets the nipple in his mouth he sucks in his lip. Nothing is working! I can't pull it out and opening wide doesn't change things.

Any input?

I don't understand how you can't pull it out. Have you tried putting your finger in the lower corner of his mouth and "mushing" down toward his chin? Hope that came out like I meant it. It looks pretty harsh in type.
You do just have to keep doing it every feeding and he'll eventually get the hang of it.

Just a thought, there is a frenulum connecting the gum to the bottom lip, just like the upper, but smaller. Is it possible this frenulum is too tight or thick? Kind of like a "tongue-tied" bottom lip?

He's had his mouth looked at, too. It is sucked in so tight that I cant get my finger in there, and when I do get it in there far enough he comes off the boob and screams.

Huhh...

What position are you nursing in? Have you tried football hold? That often helps with a lower lip issue.

I can barely get him comfortably latched on in the cradle hold, let alone the football hold... And I've nursed lying down maybe twice, but its hard to get him in a good position.

I don't know about "unfixable" but my 9 mo old still nurses with her bottom lip sucked in. It quit hurting me and she gets plenty of milk, so I quit worrying about getting the "perfect" latch.

Awh, your post makes me feel SO much better. I just don't think it's going to be something that he changes. He also gets plenty of milk so I don't worry much, it just hurts right now.

Can you slow the latch process down a bit so that you're leading it? If you have him open and then drag your areola and nipple down his mouth (starting at the top, near the nose and moving down), the lower lip should sort of snag on the areola and flange out a bit. That worked for dd quite a bit-- the key is that it pulls their lower lip down so far that once they're latched, it's too far down to suck back in.
