Responsibility for vaccine safety would be taken away from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under a bill introduced Wednesday in Congress, the latest salvo in the battle between parents of autistic children and the Atlanta-based agency.

The Vaccine Safety and Public Confidence Assurance Act of 2006 would create a new federal agency separate from the CDC. The bill seeks to remove what its backers contend is a dangerous conflict of interest in having the CDC promote widespread vaccination and at the same time watchdog safety issues that might decrease vaccination rates.

And here's another bill to be introduced-The Comprehensive Comparative Study of Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Populations Act of 2006:

Your senator or representative. Even if you aren't registered to vote, they don't need to know that ... a letter coming from someone in the right area (you COULD vote for them--or not--based on where you live) is all they need to pay attention.

ETA: If you are registered, don't forget to point out that fact.

Please check out The Age of Autism thread - Dan Olmstead talks about this this bill.

Weldon's approach is wide-ranging. For one thing, he's not putting all his eggs in the mercury-equals-autism basket, so to speak -- he's not asking for more research solely to determine whether the mercury-based preservative thimerosal triggered a huge rise in autism diagnoses in the 1990s.

While that question has been the focus of attention -- and properly so, given the government's own decision to phase out thimerosal from routine childhood immunizations beginning in 1999 -- there is the prospect that other vaccine ingredients, and other side effects, may be insidiously at work.

That's probably the closest category there is (I love how the website e-mail thingies make you pick a topic ... it's just helping them file things correctly.)

Healthcare is a HUGE issue in this country, especially with the aging baby boomers; it's not a topic that will be easily ignored and brushed off to read "some other day."
Your letters will be read and responded to (even if it's just a form letter) and your opinion tallied, but give them time.

The only politician I've had issues with never receiving a response from--not even a form letter saying "I got your letter and will consider your opinions"--is my governor, Matt Blunt. Not that I had a high opinion of his "governing" to begin with, but that's another story. Even Bush's office sends form letters back!
