The waste of sposie mamas (RANT)

Ok so we had some really good friends come to visit this weekend and bring there 6 month old daughter (our goddaughter). This was our first time to get to see her. We were so excited!! Any way as the days went on I started really noticing the waste produced by there family. I guess since we cloth diaper and use cloth wipes I have just forgotten all the waste sposies produce. And it seems like they are over wasters.. not only using sposies but using 4 wipes at a wet diaper and even more with a poopie one. And then when they fed DD it was paper towels every where. I have had the same roll of paper towels on my spindle for god knows how long and they went threw it and another one in just the 2 1/2 days they were here. My DH even said man they sure produce a lot of waste and I was shocked because that is not like him to notice things like that. Sorry I just had to rant about people not thinking what they are doing to the enviroment.

Way to go CD mamas at least we are doing our part.

This is something I've definitely noticed myself! We use disposable wipes when we're out with DD, and it takes way too many of them to clean up a poopy mess. Today even DH was commenting about how much nicer cloth wipes are

I really don't like disposable wipes because they have NO gripping power ...and sadly I think they're made that way on purpose ...the less the grip the more you use and the more you have to buy!!! cloth wipes ALL the way ...I use/need ONE for even the messiest of poopy butts ... my favorites are cotton terry towel on one side and soft buttery flannel on the other.

but yes ... dd users do produce more waste (there are exceptions to this of course .. I have been a dd user ... especially when stuck in the hospital for weeks with Skylar ...BUT I do what I can to minimize by using cloth wipes etc) ... if producing waste were an issue for the majority of dd users they wouldn't be using them in the first place ... and it seriously doesn't help that the big dd companies design their products so you'll need to use more (ie buy more) to get the job done.
I've noticed that too. I've noticed myself going back to basics and using a rag for things, etc. The only place I'm wasteful is toilet scrubber brushes because, dude, it's so nice not to have a toilet brush on the side of the toilet collecting dust no one wants to clean off

I agree with you that, in general, people who use disposables don't think about the environment as much as cloth-using mamas but I do know some sposies-using mamas that are very environmentally-conscious, just in other ways. Really, there are some out there.
I did mention cloth dipes to them once or twice but didn't want to make them feel guilty. Us moms all deal with so much guilt as it is, at least in my experience. Just my 2 cents.

We just started CD and in my first shipment we got 10 cloth wipes. I thought that we might CD but still use sposie wipes - I tried the cloth wipes with just water and OMG I HAD NO IDEA HOW CRUDDY SPOSIE WIPES WERE!!!!! I needed 4-5 sposies for one poop change, and I need maybe three cloths for a real big poop. Plus since I only had 10 cloth wipes I ran out before I did laundry (did I mention this was our first week?) so I went back to the sposies I had on hand and they were so soapy I wanted to rinse off DDs bottom AFTER I used the sposies, just 'cause I had seen how nice and clean she was with cloth. Also before, she had terrible bleeding rashes with every poop and now that we have switched her bum is so happy and clean and intact and I can't say anything better than that. I will be ordering more cloth wipes as soon as I can.

That rules, Jessica!!!

I have really noticed how much less trash we produce now that I'm using cloth diapers and wipes. On trash day I gather up all of the trash, and we used to have this giant diaper pail of disposable (stinky) diapers to deal with.

I really can't believe how much less waste we're producing now. Disposable diapers were about 1/2 our trash! That's pretty bad.

Although, having been a full-time working mama I can empathize that probably a lot of working moms feel like it's too much to deal with cloth on top of pumping, working-mom-guilt, and the whole variety of things you have to deal with as a working mom that add stress to the day.

Yup, I never realized how much less waste we were producing either until we started CDing. Not only do we CD, but we use flannel wipes to clean up DS after meals and pick up after spills. We use terry and microterry towels instead of using disposable swiffers too and it saves a lot of $. In fact, it takes us a longgg time to go through a roll of paper towels, b/c it seems like we rarely use them. We know someone who has quads, and omg I imagine that since they are using sposies, that they must fill up at LEAST one huge garbage can each week with just dirty dipes/wipes. In fact, today I mentioned to my DH about how much $ they could have saved and how much less trash they would have if they CD'd instead.
My DH and I were talking about this the other day, I told him that if we used sposies and had a 2 yr old and newborn in them we would fill our 30 gallon trash barrel weekly probably with just sposies. But now it sits 1/2 empty at the curb once a week. We don't use any paper products other than TP, and we compost and recycle, so with 5 people in a home we have very little trash, but I have neighbors who have less people, and they have 5-6 or more huge trash cans out every week!
I recently made a bunch of tissues out of old t-shirts (2 layers) since it's allergy season, and they are really great to use, and noses don't chap with cloth, but they do with paper!

My inlaws are like that too - everytime they visit, they go through a 'double' roll of toilet paper in 1 1/2 days - yes - 3 whole rolls for a weeks visit. I have no idea how they are using the tp, and frankly don't really want to know. I am just flabbergasted everytime. DH makes them goto Costco and buy more :LOL

Also a F/T working mama (see my new thread about new identity as a mama) I find the cloth a lot easier than the regular laundry, and can't wait to do it so I can have my faves back! As to waste, that was the reason we switched after so long - I could feel my insides curdling when I took out the baby trash - 30 lbs of human waste to the dump??? But why?? So here we are today, and never looking back. Plus CD is so much fun! I think that if you can take something like baby poop and make it fun, then you really should persue that option.

I like your attitude.

I noticed a huge difference in the amount of garbage we produce since changing to cloth, especially with two in diapers. My husband has even thanked me because we have a 'pay-as-you-throw' garbage plan here and we've been able to cut back our subscription and save money there.

And I never even buy paper towels.

i totally know what you mean. i'm still learning, but the more i learn, the less trash we generate and the happier i am. recently, we visited a family who uses sposies and wipes, a paper towel or two for every single thing (napkins for the kids, wiping a spot up off the counter, everything) and paper plates (the coated kind) for every meal for each of their children! i was trying to imagine how much garbage they put out each week. i actually wish i'd started a conversation about it when i asked to do a load of diapers, and i received a comment along the lines of "oh, you really waste water having to do all those loads of laundry with cloth diapers, don't you?"

we reduced our trash so much after switching to cloth. Aside from the diapers, we ended up reducing our use of paper products in other departments. I switched to cloth pads (although I only got one period before conceiving again :LOL), we use old cruddy prefolds for cleaning cloths, rarely use paper towels or paper napkins, etc. Oh, and I'm another one who never realized how bad 'sposie wipes were compared to cloth. I got a couple packs of them at DD's baby shower two years ago, and still have at least one pack left over because I use them so infrequently - I only ever used them when I was out somewhere, and was amazed at how many it took to clean a poopy diaper compared to just one baby wash cloth!
It's amazing how much general waste we have reduced since starting to CD. It just gets you thinking. I'm also better about recycling. Oh - and I love cloth wipes. We still send disposables to DS's daycare and I hate using them.
OK I just started using cloth TODAY put one on him at 8 AM and went through till 8:30 tonight with them. I would say I probably changed at least 6 diapers in 12 hours.........(I only have 12 CPF's and 3 covers, he's in a sposie tonight cause his covers ended up having to all go in the wash. One mama didn't have the lid on his sippy cup tight so that spilled everywhere, one was poop, the other one *might* have gotten pee on it....wasn't sure but washing it to be safe.) It amazes me already.

My MOM, however, is saying she's not dealing with cd folding watching him tomorrow......grr......so he'll have 8 hours of sposies....EVENTUALLY I'll have fitteds or pockets or AIO's and I'll get her around to it.

What diaper moms send out the wipes free with their stuff? I'm interested enough to try one at home....
I've got a TON of sposie wipes to use up in his room.......I bought literally 3 giganto boxes when they were on sale.

And I've got these dipes he outgrew before I used them under his crib, they were waiting for 'the next baby....' What will I do with them? They're out of a huge box from Toys R us, one of the plastic bags is opened with maybe 5 dipes used, the other one was never touched!

Donate them to a shelter. as for WAHMS that send out freebie wipes. there are a lot of them GMWW (i know i have gotten a few from her, I love her sherpa wipes), JamTots ( I have alot of there flannel bug wipes) and I feel bad but i can't think of where i have gotten my others from.
i DONT CONCIDER MYSELF CRUCNHY, but people that COME TO MY HOUse, find it very weird that I dont have paper towels. we keep a rubbermaid drawer under the sink full of wash cloths. Its normal to me I guess.

NAK (as if you could tell my son was pushing all the buttons)
