What are you all doing for the nausea?

It's been one week since the "morning sickness" (aka ALL DAY SICKNESS) began and I'm desparately needing something to help ease this nausea.

It's all day long, from morning to night. I can't eat much, smells bother me ALOT, and I feel like doing nothing but curling up and hoping the nausea eases up. My poor toddler is bored out of her mind.

I'd like ideas for natural remedies to deal with the nausea. Any ideas?

TIA

My midwife told me that papaya juice, ginger, and motion sickness bands could work for nausea. I've tried the ginger and papaya juice and neither has worked. Nothing has worked for me and I am just absolutely miserable all day long. I feel sorry for my toddler as well. I try to do as much as I can with her but I am just so miserable the entire time.

I know that it is REALLY hard to do (I myself have major general food aversion during pregnancy) but I find that if I force myself to eat a small amount of high protien snack once an hour or so, my nausea is much, much more manageable.

So, I have a bowl of raw almonds next to the bed, so when I wake up in the night I can have a couple. I have a few of them when I wake up. I have a piece of bread w/hummus or pbj for a couple snacks during the day. I also will occasionally have a small (like the size of a dice) piece of cheese, or cottage cheese, or nonfat yougurt w/applesauce. I know that is is REALLY, really tiresome to eat and eat and eat and eat, but if you eat high protien low fat stuff, you really will feel better.

My last pregnancy I had terrible nausea and vomiting, nothing worked but I wasn't very willing to try much and working full time night shifts made me so tired and the nausea worse. This time round I have forced myself to eat even though I feel nauseous and I do feel better. I also have an 18 month old whose quality of life has gone down since I became pregnant

I would say, rest when you can - sleep when the toddler sleeps. Eat small frequent meals. Good luck!

I squeeze some fresh lemon into ice-cold water, and that seems to help. This is not something I would normally like, but I tried it after a couple friends told me that lemon helps nausea, and now I crave it. Weird, I know. Other than that, I try to eat Saltines. I am in the same boat...I feel so crappy and I feel bad that I don't have more energy for my toddler.

Nibbling on slices of apple gets my stomach to where I can get something down when it gets really bad for me.

And peanut butter on saltines helps get me to where I feel like I can keep food down. When we used to get hammered in the younger and dumber days, it was a "widely known fact" that you can't throw up peanut butter, it has magical qualities for staying put in your stomach for the morning after a binge...I have never known this to be proven false.

I agree that the less you eat the sicker you will probably feel, so try to keep something in your stomach, even if it means nibbling on cheerios all day long...which is all I eat some days, ds and I eat cheerios.

Sometimes all it takes is getting something in my stomach and then I feel "hungry." Like actually eating something, not hunger in the pre-pregnancy sense. Will that ever return, I wonder?

Good luck,
T

Emitrol. It is an over the counter medicine that tastes like cherrys. It is safe to take while you are pregnant. I took it with DD. You take a teaspoon every time you feel neasus. It will keep you from vomitting and take away the neasua.

I puked a whole lot, for months with my first pg. This time, haven't yet (knock wood), but I've also been really aggressive at trying these things, b/c now I have a toddler to chase and I can't afford to hangout at the toilet all morning
.

My tips (other than the eating/blood sugar tips already given - those are absolutely true)

#1 - DON"T OVERHEAT. Run your a/c, drink ice water, run fans, dress cool, no hot showers. I was preg with Robin in the Winter, got up and took a warm shower, and found myself puking in the shower. Took me a while to realize that temp related to my nausea. This time, when I come downstairs in the morning, where the a/c is off overnight, I'm immediately nauseaous in the still, warm air. If I run outside into the fresh air, it clears (I eat while doing all this of course). Stay cool, and when you get nauseous try to cool off further

#2 - Protect your airway. When you brush your teeth, breath through your mouth. When you eat, take small bites so you don't chew it too long. Don't hold pens in your mouth. Remember to breath. If your body feels like something in your mouth is threatening your breathing, it'll make you puke - that's why lots of preg women gag on their toothbrushes, even at the front of your mouth. When you feel like puking, breath through your mouth. Your body is less likely to send puke up the hole if you're using it to sustain life.

#3 - Increase you B vitamin intake. I got a prescription for Premesis prenatal vits. this time (your midwife may have free samples you can try for a few weeks). it's a good prenatal with a built-in time release B6. you could also take just and OTC B supplement. Apparently studies show there's a relationship between morning sickness and B vitamin deficiency, so boosting your B might reduce your nausea

#4 - Relax. Some pregnancy puking is psychological - fears or worries about the baby or pregnancy

#5 - Avoid nastiness. Gross smells and textures are nothing to play with for the next few months. If you think it might gross you out, stay on the safe side.

#6 - Don't Puke - When you have a stomach virus, puking helps get rid of the disease and makes you feel much better. Morning sickness puking doesn't make you feel any better - you feel just as gross after as you did before. So it's better to try to not puke than to think you should just get it over with.

#7 - Ginger. I liked traditional medicinals "Ginger Aid" tea (but ice it so you don't overheat)

#8 - this isn't natural and I haven't tried it, but my midwife said OTC sleep aids, like Tylenol PM and the one that doesn't have Tylenol, are safe while pregnant and have the mysterious effect of eliminating morning sickness the following morning.

I've been taking Premesis and have been WOWED at it's effects. Good luck and know it should get better soon!

Hi, Giselle!
:

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it usually helps me to never let my stomach get totally empty. Since you are nursing, this means almost constant eating. Like pps said, high protein/fat foods can be very helpful. IME eating late at night is essential, too, to make it through the night and morning. I read somewhere that yogurt is helpful, which interestingly is something I crave (and it seems to work).

One of my friends who is PG said staying hydrated seems to be helping her. I know for myself it is easy to forget to DRINK. I find that if I drink too late (when I'm already queasy) it can make me throw up, so the timing has to be right.

Oh, and I'd vary the foods you eat when you feel ill. DH was always stuffing crackers into me when I was sick with DD1, and then I developed an aversion to them . . .the thought of crackers would make me want to . . .you know.

I think anything that helps change the taste of your mouth helps . . .gum, orange juice or anything with citrus . . .things like that. It sort of distracts you from feeling sick.

I know some people who HAD to take medicine, though. Thankfully, eating often was enough for me. Everyone is so different.

Hi, Giselle! I know you from thebabywearer, and did not know you were pregnant-- congratulations! I am sorry you are feeling so nauseous, and can so relate to not having my best energy for my 28 mo DS. I send compassionate thoughts your way...
I used Premesis for DS, and it was like someone turned off the nausea lightswitch-- really, I felt the relief within a day, and it was a huge help. This time around, I thankfully have not needed it, even though I am having some afternoon/eve nausea. I am taking Rainbow Light prenatals, the 3x/day, and wonder if the ginger in them is helping. I am also taking 100 mg supps 3x/day of B-6, and think this is also making a difference. My OB actually gave a big thumbs up (literally!) to the Rainbow Light, which made me smile (I thought he might be a typical OB and prefer prescription). Anyway, the only other thing I am doing differently this time around is eating a lot more protein (using the Brewer's Diet, hoping to ward off preeclampsia this time). I sure hope you are able to get some relief!

Thanks for all the wonderful tips! I've tried some and am better able to manage the nausea.

I started to eat saltine crackers with peanut butter as soon as I wake up. That gets rid of the morning nausea for a while. Then, when I feel it coming again, I make sure to eat some protein. I also have started trying to eat small amounts of food throughout the day to not let my stomach get empty. I was taking Emetrol, but it's just so full of sugar that it made me want to switch to something more natural. So, now I'm taking Nux Vomica, a homeopathy and it really seems to be working on calming the nausea.

Thanks again for the tips! You've really helped me a lot!
