in the mdc>birth and beyond they're going about IV use during labour for a issue with GBS. never heard of this junk in my life till this pregnancy, sure didnt have it before. I do NOT want to see a doctor for anything at all. it appears to be uncommon but does anyone else worry about this? or had problems because of it with UP/UC?

GBS is very common and is in the digestive tract of most people. The problems occur when there are germs on the rectal area, and the medical staff checks the mom, she can become colonized vaginally, and it *could* cause an infection in the baby. But you can do a perineal wash with Hibiclens liquid soap, available at any local pharmacy: Walgreens, RiteAid, what have you. You make a solution and squirt it on your bottom during labor, and that takes care of it. Kills the germs on contact. No need of abx. If you do a google search for GBS wash you will find several recipes....PM me if you can't find it and I will give you mine....

thankyou, thankyou thankyou. that's what I wanted to know, I figured you guys didnt exactly panic and could advise. so since I dont want tested at all, suppose it's worth a shot to do a GBS wash in labour regardless in case? and how will it affect being it the tub and out again, do it again later?
With my MW birth last time I was GBS+ when I was tested (high colonization) and did hibicleanse/water douche for a week and retested... same result. I didn't use the wash with DH though (on him) and I think we just passed it back to me again. I didn't know my result when I went into labor though so I did a douche in labor with the hibicleanse/water solution (with intact membranes) and his water broke 15 min. before he was born (well, they were broken by MW b/c she didn't want him born in the caul - :SIGH: ). He was not sick but I got an infection pretty bad at 8 days post partum and no placenta pieces were found... just had to have IV antibiotics in the hospital b/c of fever, etc.

That stunk... but I think it's b/c of the GBS (it was really high in my body)... but it's just a guess. This time I was tested and was -. It was the only thing I got tested for this pg (that and blood sugars since mine tend to run high in pg and I just wanted to be sure I wasn't going to grow a GD baby that might cause shoulder distocia in delivery). I could have done without it and just did the washes and such, but I didn't want to bother if I didn't need to.

All that sounds quite medical, sorry... I don't mean it to be scary at all.

I didn't test with my last 2 HB babies,

if you aren't at risk I wouldn't worry

risk signs are prolonged rupture of membranes, prolonged labor, fever during labor..otherwise I wouldn't worry.
I have never tested with any of my babies. With my first they weren't testing routinely, midwives never offered or discussed it with my second and I just didn't do it with my UC baby. Never had any problems at all. Water birth helps because it washes away and dilutes the bacteria. I would not want antibiotics without having an infection because it would cause such a host of problems including jeopardizing my nursing relationship with thrush.

The CDC actually has two sets of recommendations....

They recommend that everyone be tested, but in the case that someone did NOT get tested (for whatever reason), then they only recommend treating with antibiotics in cases of risk.... premature labor before 37 weeks, rupture greater than 18 hours, fever in labor, these sorts of things.

So, if you don't test, you're probably still okay.
I wasn't tested with my first pregnancy. I declined all tests.
They didn't test for it when I was preg with my dd. I was tested for it at 34 weeks with my ds and I was neg. I am heavily leaning towards not being tested this time. I think it's funny (not in a haha way) how different the post on GBS are in this particular forum compared to the rest of MDC!
I am not worried about GBS. It's pretty rare for baby to get it. Serious if they do, yes, but not common. To me it feels like another scare tactic. Another way we don't trust our bodies and birth. Another intervention (possibly caused by the darn cervical check to swab actually). If I had prolonged ROM I would consider some measures, but as it is my water has never broken on it's own until it was time to push.
I was reading more on it...10% of women test pos for it, 1 of 100 babies get infected of those 10%....higher chance of a footling breech, it seems to me.
