Hi all.

My parents just moved to Maui, and dd (18mo) and I will be visiting on Sept 3rd for at least a week (still waiting on plane ticket verification from my dad). I'm looking for suggestions on things to do with dd. I'm not at all a beach or pool person, so I'd really rather *do* stuff with her than hang around all day. My step-mom works in Lahaina, and if I take her into work I could probably use her car all day, so I'm game for about anything. General fun stuff to do or special events would be great.

I suppose since it's such a tourist-y place that I'd find things to do when I got there, but having recommendations from like-minded mamas would be great.

I went when ds was 1.(mid-October) visit haleakala(sp?) and drive out to hana and eat lunch on the beach there. there's great places to stop so the little one can get out too.
Lahaina has the oldest tree there that you could visit and it's close to shopping

there's the aquaurium not sure how good it is since I didn't go there but remember it. We also went to a pinapple farm that did tours.

Well i live down in Kihei. I highly recommend th Maui Ocean center. We just went the other day. We have been many times. They have a touch pool and just opened a new exhibit about mammals.
On the Lahaina side there are great beaches, The Sugar Cane train(touristy, but fun for the kids). All the libraries have a toddler story time. The one in Kihei is on Thursday mornings. Hana is always a treat but is a long drive. So it would depend on your baby if they like the car or not.
Queen Kahumanu shopping center has a cute ocean themed play ground for younger kids. We don't go to the mall often but the kids love it. And if you go upcountry i Haiku there is a GREAT playground at Giggle Hill. More officialy The 4th Marine Division Park on Kokomo road.....

That's all I have for now! Nursing and typing, lol

Aloha!

Thank-you very much! That's a huge help, I'll definately look into this stuff. My dad and step-mom actually live in Kihei as well, so Aloha to my soon-to-be/short-lived neighbour!
We're going to be there 10 days until the 13th, and I found out that I will have an extra car to drive all to myself, so this will be great.

When I first went to Maui, err... 7 years ago, with my mom-- we did do the drive to Hana, as well as the Sugar Cane train. I almost forgot about the train, I'll bet dd would like that, but I don't think I'm up for the scary drive to Hana.
Everything else my mom and I did besides wandering wouldn't be good for a toddler, which is why I asked. Really, this is great!

One more question for ya... I'm used to having plenty of choices for stores in my area to buy natural & organic items. Is there any place in particular around there to go to? At the very least, I really want organic milk. I have no idea what the market for that is like out there, so I thought I'd ask where to go! Esp since you're in Kihei.

MAHALO!

Maui actually seems to have a good selection of organic foods. Even the safeway here (in Kihei). Ive tried 3 natural food markets, Mana Foods in Paia, Down to Earth in Kahului and one on south kihei rd (sorry brain fart)

Youve got to go to the beach at least once while youre here! I have a toddler and a one year old and they LOVE it. Its a great place to play and discover all kinds of wonderfull things, not to mention cool off

Oh, that's great news. Thanks so much!
We will definately go to the beach a bunch, I just wanted to make sure we had other things to do as well, since I doubt my parents will have much of a clue unless they dig around for info themselves. My dad's not into much besides sitting by the pool. Which is not for me (or dd)!

Thanks!

My 16 mo old *loved* the Maui Ocean Center. It captivated her for an entire afternoon, despite the sticker shock I had of paying for tickets to get it. I enjoyed it too, but not as much as she did!

She liked the beach a lot, too, but I found that the things she liked were very different from the things I thought she'd like. There was a little shower to rinse off feet. She could stand in it for hours, turning her feet this way and that (I started feeling very guilty about water usage.) I thought she'd like playing in the sand, but she prefered to walk in it, and feel it squish under her toes.

Anyway, hope you have a great trip!

We're leaving today!

Thanks again for all the input! We're def checking out the Maui Ocean Center. I was a little put off when I looked up the price, but apparently my step-mom can get free tickets.
: Sweet.

Anyway - thanks to all. Hopefully I survive the flight with dd.
