hello,

my family is visiting toronto at the end of september. we are looking for inexpensive fun places to take the little guys (3 years old and 7 months). any suggestions? outdoor things or we are also looking for something to do right outside of the city. is it easy to access nature without driving for ages?

thanks!

Riverdale Farm (near River and Gerrard streets) is a free, small working farm right in the city that's very little kid friendly with chickens, horses sheep etc.

High Park (near Bloor and High Park Ave) has lots of green space and a spot with an extensive play structure, swings etc all free.

Lots of little city parks through TO.

Toronto Zoo is fun - we go once a year but not free.

Don't know about outside the city much.

I like going to the Island. It's a nice ferry ride over ($6) and loads for the kiddies to do (free and to pay for). I highly recommend packing for a picnic as the food over there is expensive and tastes bad. There's a splash pad, a wading pool, loads of picnic areas, playgrounds and pay rides.

Here's a link to the map http://www.toronto.ca/parks/pdf/isla...island_map.pdf

I second all of the above. You may also want to check out Dufferin Grove Park - it is about a block and a half from the subway, and is lots of fun.

See http://www.dufferingrovepark.ca

The Royal Ontario Museum is not free, but does have a great children's "discovery" centre, with enough hands-on activities to keep little ones busy.

Many enjoy the Science Centre as well - in my experience it is overwhelming for small ones: lots of flashing lights, noise, and waaaaaay too many school-bus loads of bigger kids running wild!

There is a farmer's market at Riverdale Farm on Tuesdays from 3-7pm and one at East York Civic Centre at Coxwell Ave. and Mortimer Ave. on Tuesdays in the morning, can't remember exactly what time. Also I believe there is one at St. Lawrence Market on Saturdays starting at 5 am. It is located downtown at Front St. and Jarvis St.
http://www.kiddingaroundtoronto.com is a good site, there is an event calendar to see what is going on in the city.

The market at East York Civic Centre starts at 9 a.m. (I believe the official hours are 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
