We want to scrape off all the "cottage cheese"/acoustic stuff from the ceilings of our 1974 house. I had assumed it contained asbestos and would therefore be a messy/dirty/hazardous job. I was planning to go out of town with DS while it was done.
But then a weatherization guy was over and said perhaps it doesn't contain asbestos, in which case it would just be a big messy job but not as hazardous.

The point: does anyone know of a local firm/lab/testing place where I could take or send some of the material to have it tested for asbestos?

I can already see this thread sinking like a rock but it's worth a try!

in case anyone else is wondering, I've contacted this firm:
JSE Laboratory, Inc.
3325 SE Harrison St
Milwaukie, OR 97222
(503) 659-8338
and it costs $45 to find out with a 3 to 5 day turnaround. $75 if you need to know immediately.

When we were renovating our house we were constantly sending in samples of nasty tiles and paint. We were very happy with PBS Environmental downtown. Friendly folks, happy to go over the results with you. They charged about $25/sample in '98.
