I had my two little ones in the car today and we stopped at a music store. Parked way over in the corner of the lot to have more space for unloading. My four year old son got out of the minivan on the side his brother was buckled into, after I opened the door. (I always make him do that in parking lots, etc.) While I was unbuckling the baby, 4 yo DS was kicking the curb. All of sudden, he was shrieking and crying. I immediately rebuckled the baby and turned to weeping son. He'd kicked a fire ant nest. After frantically slapping all the ones I could see off his legs, I pulled off his shoes and sat him in the car with legs hanging down, so i could check his shorts, between his toes, etc. All of this happened in about a minute. Of course, people were staring at me...I can only imagine what they thought was going on.

After about 10 minutes of thorough checking, we had calmed down. He came out of it with only (!) 3 bites. And what a champ he was...once he stopped crying, he wanted to go into the music store and help me "find things." Seems to have recovered much faster than I ever did from a fire ant bite. We told them in the store about the nest, but they stared at us blankly.

what a troooper that your son still wanted to go to the store! i totally agree on those days; in the moment it feels like things couldn't get any worse but in hindsight it's pretty funny.

Afterward I started to get paranoid about someone seeing the whole thing and mistaking it for physical punishment. Ack! But they'd have to be real idjits to assume that, so I'll hope for the best.

Aw, your poor son
I'm glad he escaped with just three bites though.

DP always tells me that his first memory is of sitting down in a bunch of fire ants next to the pool at his apartment complex as a toddler. He remembers being bitten and bitten and unable to jump in the pool because his parents weren't outside and he couldn't swim alone. Now why he was allowed to play by the pool without parents, I do not know.

He laughs about it now and when we saw a picture of that pool in his baby book he pointed to the edge and laughed and told me that was where the fire ant incident had happened. I'm sure you'll all laugh about this one day, too

No fire ants in TN? Wow. We've got them in NC. Maybe they don't cross the border?

OP, I'm glad that your son's feeling better. Ant bites really hurt.

Oh my! I'm glad he handled it so well (and you too!). I still remember being little and standing in a regular ant bed. I got 'et up, to use a bit of Southern slang. Ouch!

Oh man! I am so glad he only had 3 bites! I am in Texas, so I know how awful fire ants are! DD's friend in preschool got bit by a few on his arm on their playground when they had their Easter egg hunt. I hope he heals up from them soon.

Wow that was fortunate that he only got three bites from all that! I guess now you know he hasn't got an allergy to fire ants

I remember when I was a child my big brother lent on a big bee hive in a tree whilst playing hide and seek together, and he upset that hive so much that he got about 30 stings all over his body - fortunately he was pretty much immune to stings after this.. haha

Where in the northeast? I have lived in SE PA all my life and the only place I've ever come across fire ants was in Georgia!
