I have recently noticed that DS (14 mos)'s penis seems to be bent at the end. He is the only uncircumsized male I have ever seen, so I don't know if this is "normal" or not.

When changing/bathing him, it's almost like I can see where his penis ends (inside the foreskin), then it seems like it's just foreskin that bends. I don't try to retract him or anything like that, but DS does NOT like for me to "handle" his penis very much during changes, and I don't want to hurt him or damage him, so I pretty much have left him alone thus far. I have been able to straighten the skin out, but it goes right back to the bent position it was in.

I don't think I've described this very well at all. I would just take him in to the doc, but the one time our current doc (okay, nurse practitioner) examined him she retracted him!!
And she had just told me that her sons were uncirc'd, so I let down my guard.
So, clearly, she's not the first person I'd turn to for advice about my uncirc'd DS.

I'm thinking now that maybe his diaper is just contorting him in strange directions? I don't know.....anyone?

On my son (12 mos), it looks like his foreskin extends a little past the end of his penis, and the extra skin hangs down a little making it look a little bent. Maybe your son is the same? I don't know a whole lot about intact penises either, but my gut feeling it that it's normal...

Thanks, Shelly. I HOPE that it's normal. But when you say his foreskin extends "a little past the end of his penis", I guess I would say on my DS (whoops, almost typed "DH" there - which would be TMI and impossible, lol) that it extends "a lot". I haven't really measured it, but I'd guess that the "extra" skin extends for half an inch (maybe 3/4), and it doesn't hang down, it hangs to the left.

I think maybe I'm worried b/c it doesn't look like it's just "extra" skin hanging around, it looks like ??? I don't know, maybe like his penis ends, then the skin kind of tightens in, narrows, I'm not sure how to say this, then extends to the left. It's like the penis ends, then the extra skin is maybe too tight, or something??

I really am doing a horrible job of explaining this. Reading back over my post, I have a scary mental picture, and I *know* what it looks like. My words are not matching the reality here.

Does anyone have links for pictures of "normal" uncircumcized infants? I think my descriptive skills are not up to the task.

I think your son's foerskin sounds like my son's and I'm pretty sure my son's is normal. LOL. My son's foreskin is not retractable at all yet, I don't know if that matters though.

It is very normal for a child's foreskin to extend a significant distance past the end of the glans. The most common appearance is a "nipple" fashion where the foreskin completely covers the glans and then narrows down to a much smaller diameter and extends well beyond the glans.

This appearance will change as the child matures and grows. This foreskin will recede to a point that there may be a little extending past the glans or as much as to not completely cover the glans and the tip will protrude slightly beyond the foreskin. The penis is the most variable part of a man's body and we all look different "down there."

There is a possibility that the foreskin is a little crooked but as the penis grows, it will follow the shape and form of the penis and will become unnoticeable. I don't see it as anything to worry about at all. I think if there is any asymetry, it will resolve on it's own given time.

Ugh!.... did I ever say how much I hate the illustrations in that NOCIRC pamphlet? One of my summer projects is to draw some beautiful penises and donate them to my favorite non-profit.

I think the drawing of the infant penis seems "flubbery" and the picture of the adult one- well, holding up the foreskin... like a carpet you can sweep some dirt under... I just don't think it helps people understand the easy system of retraction... I mean- it makes it look like you would only be able to see inside there to clean if you were standing infront of the man and working with some q tips and a waterpik or something!...

I always try to keep in mind that the person who needs the illustration also is burdened with a lot of negative preconceptions- like dirty and difficult... so the drawing has a lot more of a job than to just demonstrate what it might look like.

I think that the picture needs to be done "man in the shower eye view" looking down. Granted it is a tricky thing to draw... how do you capture the essence of something with so many "looks"?

Anyway- as far as illustrations, I think that the circumstitions pages of art do a really good job of showing the "acroposthion" which is the tube of foreskin which extends past the non-erect glans. Because so much of the art is idealised forms, they represent not just what one person may look like, but what the artists had stylized into a generic- "what a penis is supposed to look like" http://www.circumstitions.com/Art1.html

On the other hand- medical photos can't avoid but depict individuals- there is this picture showing a VERY LONG foreskin... I have never seen a baby who had a foreskin this long, but this photo doesn't mention that this child probably represents one end (and a perfectly fine end) of the variations within "normal."

Here is a pair of pictures showing normal and abnormal tightness of the foreskin tip:

As far as your question Kinsey, about the way it hangs off center- it's possible that the adhesions have released on one side and not yet on the other- which allows the skin on one side to hang a little more slack. I am also concerned because you say that your son was subjected to a premature retraction... and I want you to be aware that the retraction could have cause a more stubborn form of adhesions which might require some monitoring. (meaning that when your son does become retractable that he and you know that his frenulum is normal and that any other "stuck" pieces of skin are not) You should keep an eye on this and you should also think about following up (lawsuit, complaint to medical board, friendly info letter...) with that Dr to be sure they are not continuing to do that to other boys.

The off center thing should not be a problem for him except maybe it will deflect his urine when he is out of diapers and trying to pee standing up... but that's a few years from now (unless he's a giant- he won't be tall enough to pee standing at the toilet for a while after he has potty trained) He can learn to allign his foreskin or retract it before he pees.

Whew!! Thank you all (especially for those links. I started feeling better after I saw the first one)!!

Yeah, he does look "normal". I think maybe his penis has just been hanging to the left inside his diaper, and that's why it bends.

As far as the retraction goes, it was only as far as that picture here: "Here is a pair of pictures showing normal and abnormal tightness of the foreskin tip:
http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues...ew10610_fm.html " I saw what she was doing and yelled at her to get her hands off. I will be keeping an eye on him, but hopefully, it didn't do any damage. I told her at that time that she is NOT supposed to do that. (I am not TOO worried about her doing it to other boys b/c it's a military health clinic, and I believe we're the only folks to bring our child there vs. a pediatrician. I'm just going to assume that if she tries to retract one of the sericemen, he'll let her know when to stop, lol)

Thank you all so much. I guess I'm just a worrywart, but better to worry than not care, right?

my dh worried about that too. He changed ds' diaper the other day and yelled for me like something was wrong. I get out there and he's pointing going ' Is his peter( I think dh fears the word'penis')supposed to bend like that? Is going to stay like that? Will he need to get circ'ed now?

i had to explain that it's just his foreskin that's bent not his entire penis. I told not to worry about him needing a circ as I've never heard of anyone needing one. And I asked him to please use the word penis when referring to one. my son's penis is not an enitity of it's own.
