So Mylo nearly gave me a heart attack today! He has been getting good at going up and down the stairs, so this morning I moved our baby gate up to the third step so he could practice going up and down a few stairs without me worrying about him falling down more than a step or two. about two hours after I moved the gate, I was sitting at the table working on a quilt, and he was playing what we call the "bye bye game." He comes over to the table, kisses me, says "bye!' and then goes up a couple stairs like he's leaving.... comes back and repeats the whole game for hours on end.
so he goes up the stairs, turns around, comes down to the bottom step, and then FALLS. Didn't put his hands out to catch himself or anything, and he fell right on the front of his forehead. Of course then he was crying for nana, so we had about a minute worth of nana, and he calmed right down. But when I took him away from the breast, he had the BIGGEST goose egg on his forehead that I have EVER seen. Seriously, the thing stuck out from the front of his head a good two inches. It looked like he had a golfball under his skin. Of course I felt terrible and was freaking out and calling the doctor bcause my child is going to be permanently damaged from this, right? In the meantime, mylo is standing in front of me spinning around in circles and gigling hysterically.
: the doctor heard him and said " I think he's okay." LOL and of course he is. so my question is, how much of this can any mama take?? this is our third booboo this week (the first really scary one in a long time), and it's only tuesday! And do you ever get over feeling like a bad mommy when baby gets hurt, even if it's no big deal?

I can TOTALLY relate! My DD always has a bruise somewhere on her, or so it seems. And I always feel bad. The worst one was she was standing by the rocking chair getting ready for me to come nurse and rock and momma, not thinking, turned out the light. She panicked because it went pitch black (there was a night light but it takes a sec for your eyes to adjust) and she ran for me, hit her cheek on the corner of this stupid trunk (which is no longer in my bedroom) and had the nastiest bruise on her cheek for a good week and a half.
I felt horrible! Thank God she didn't get her eye.

Even when it's not my fault, I still feel terrible. I hate to see her hurt. But it does seem that nursies cures all ills.

Oh, and if they bump their head and it swells, that's a good thing, a bad bump with no swelling is not good.

OMG, this thread brought back a memory for me....
my son kiryn was 16 months at the time (now he is 3 1/2 )....at the time we lived in a house that was all tile with some rugs put down...well he was playing with this xilaphone shaped like an alligator with wheels. i look up from my laundry pile-across the room- and he is putting his foot on it--like a skateboard!-..im not the type to overreact or intervene very quickly, so i said "honey, please put your feet on the ground thats not safe" (at this age he usually listened to me!) well he just hops right up on the thing and WHOSH off he flys head first into the tile. next thing i know hes screaming and im trying to nurse him, but hes popping off to scream and he has a golfball on his forehead.. i was a mess crying right along with him. i ended up calling the ER but by then he was popping off the breast to tell me things..15 minutes later hes back to playing--i am still scarred by the event! lol

Thanks for all the commiseration, mamas! I feel much better knowing that I'm not the only one who *maybe* overreacts a little when my munchkin gets hurt. I know it's scary when it happens, but today I can look back on it and laugh. Mylo is fine, has been ever since he fell down. His first big booboo was when he was about 9 months old and fell down the stairs while I stood right next to him.
Maybe it'll be one big booboo a year for us (yeah right.) When I called to tell my mother about it, she was unfazed and told me that by the time I was Mylo's age, I had already had stitches twice. I guess he takes after his clumsy mama.
