Can you tell me how long it took to come back up to functional enough to handle taking care of babies/toddlers?

I am about at my limit for dealing with attacks, and it really scares me that my children could be endangered by my having an attack should I have a bad one when I am the only one home with them. But at the same time my childcare options for recovery are very limited. Would it be unreasonable to have the surgery and have full childcare responsibilities back 3-4 days later?

I was up and doing stuff in 2 days - now lifting heavy stuff had to wait a week. Was back at work as an RN with no restrictions at the one week mark. Not a biggie! Actually organized my linen closet at the 36 hour mark after surgery.

i had mine out on a thursday, and was totally back in the swing of things by Monday. My son was an immobile infant at the time, but weighed about 20 pounds. I used the stroller instead of the sling for a week or so, but everything was fine.

i do have a friend who ended up with a hernia from lifting the baby too soon after hers, but she had had a c-section a few months earlier as well.

There is a slight chance you'd have to have an "open" surgery instead of a "lap" surgery, and they won't know that until they're in there. That would require a much longer recovery time, so you should be prepared for that (slight) possibility.

They said not to do sit-ups for a while, but I wasn't going to do them anyway. My DS was about 18 months old when I had mine out. He was laying on top of me when mine was hurting and happened to step on my gallbladder. I thought I was going to die it hurt so bad. The doctor had brushed off my pain as heartburn two days before. NOT!! I think 3-4 days was what it took.

I had mine out two years ago. I wasn't able to have lap surgery and got cut the old fashioned way. The first few days were quite painful and getting around was quite difficult. Be careful not to do too much too soon. I, too ended up with a hernia, which was repaired four weeks ago. That surgery has been very difficult to recover from.
Good luck.

I had been feeling bad for about 2 months before and it took a month for me to feel back to normal. I was in the hospital for over a week and I didn't drive for 2 weeks.

It would be much better to have it done before it is so bad and you can have it done as an outpatient.
