I read the book Good Germs Bad Germs . This book references research on the intestinal flora of newborns born vaginally being like the mother's, while newborns born via c-section have flora from the attending hospital staff and the room.
At our hospital tour they mentioned that for cesarean births, as long as they baby is stable, they hand the baby immediately to the Dad or support person. Dad carries the baby to the recovery room across the hall, and immediately does kangaroo care (skin to skin contact on Dad's chest). Obviously this would be great for the baby in several ways, but I am wonderring if it would help the baby develop better natural flora too. If the primary first exposure is Dad, that at least has to be better than a bunch of hospital staff! I just wanted to share in case anyone was looking at the possibility of a c-section, as I think this would be great to add to a birth plan!
The hospital that we go to is Bronson Methodist Hospital, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in case anyone needs a reference to a hospital doing this regularly!
Happy birthing!
