So I was just reading somone else thread about her nice stash of baby clothes already. I was going to respond to her thread, but then realized I was getting WAY off topic.

What size are the you ladies buying? 0-3? 3-6? That's where I get frustrated. I should probably start by saying I'm a mega-planner. I like to be prepared!

Some people say never to bother with the newborn size, and just go straight to 3-6 month stuff.

My ds was over 9.5 lbs when he was born (at 39 weeks), but he still wore the newborn size for at least a month. The 3-6 month stuff was huge on him until then, and he was a mover from week 1, so the stuff that was too big/baggy would get in his way.

With this one, I'm torn as to how much stuff to buy. I've been hitting garage sales (I *LOVE* garage sale season!), so it's not like I'm spending a fortune. If she comes at the end of July, we'll have just a little over a month of hot summer weather left.

Here's my issue, with all it's "If" clauses.
If she's early, I'll need 3-6 month summer clothes sooner.
If she's bigger than my ds, I'll need 3-6 month clothes sooner too.
But if she's late...up to 2 weeks late, summer will be just about over. If I buy any 3-6 month summer clothes she may never wear them.
Same thing if she weighs less than my ds did!

Or, I could just use the white onsies I have and let that be her summer wardrobe.

Oh, but the girl clothes are SOOOOO CUTE! Seriously, sundresses w/ hats? I'm such a sucker.

My kids all wore newborn/0-3 month clothes for a while, so I definitely get plenty of that. I would get some of those sizes if I were you and only buy a handful of 3-6 month outfits until you know how long you'll need summer clothes in that size. Just me though.

I don't have that issue because here in South Louisiana our kids can almost wear summer clothes all year long. Bleh!

WoW! That is some super planning.
My sister and I have been rotating clothes back and forth for 4 kids. The newborn size was useful for out 9 pound daughter, but after that I added 1 size to where she was so that the cloth bum would fit!

That's all my input.

I bought practically nothing last time, and still had enough clothes. Seems like people give you tons of stuff. I did have a shower, though. If summer really ends for you at the end of August, I doubt I would buy too much truly summer stuff in 3-6 months size. It is hard for me to wrap my brain around, since summer goes on and on here. If you find yourself short on things come August, I doubt it would be too hard to pick a few things up. Garage sale stuff is fun, so obviously buy the things that are too adorable to pass up, but I wouldn't worry about having a full summer wardrobe in 3-6 month.

And dresses are so impractical on young babies. They also don't work for crawlers. Of course, you have to buy SOME
, but onesies make a lot more sense for summer.

I agree with the pp who said not to buy too much, b/c ppl LOVE to buy baby clothes (and blankets, ugh half of the gifts were baby blankets). Really some sleepers is all you need. I have so much boy baby clothes, I don't know what to do with it all, guess I won't be buying anything for this baby... he basically is just getting a new carseat and that's it.

What did you find impractical about dresses? I guess I was thinking it would be easier to change diapers if I could just lift a skirt up rather than the whole snap crotch thing...

I wouldn't buy much offhand. A few things in nb or 0-3 size and go from there. If you have huge babies, then you're going to outgrown nb/0-3 in no time. I have a huge stash in that size, hardly used. Also, if you have a shower you will get more clothes then you know what to do with!

With a summer baby, have a few onesies, some socks, a couple pairs of leggings, and some footed sleepers and you're fine to start out. You can alwayss go buy more.

I'll be stocking up on "newborn", 0-3, and I'll pick up a few preemie outfits. Both DDs were in preemie sleepers for about a week or two, although they were 7 and 10 days postdates respectively, and over 7 lbs.

I'll just be getting sleepers mainly, or long-sleeved, long-legged rompers. A few long-sleeved onesies to wear around the house with Baby Legs, and that's pretty much it. We don't have much of a summer
. DD1 was born in Phoenix in July and she never wore anything other than a onesie or those cute little onesies that look like dresses. DD2 was born in WA in March and lived in sleepers.

My mum was just down to visit and she pretty much set up me up for clothes. I have some newborn/0-3 month stuff since DS was 8lbs and still wore those sizes for almost a month. She also bought some 3-6 months stuff, but it is mostly onesies and sleepers so she could wear those no matter what the season. I figure that I don't want too much of the 0-3 month stuff that snaps at the bottom since the CD make everything a little bigger down there.

Not everyone gets a ton of stuff at their showers. My work shower was a cash gift, and we put that towards the stroller. The shower from my friends/family, I was showered with, oddly enough, bath stuff. It wasn't planned that way, and it was a small shower, but I got a lot of bath stuff- like the infant tub, towels, washcloths, baby bath, etc. Only 2 blankets total (in fact, I had a small panic attack about not having enough receiving blankets and made a special trip to babies r us and bought like 5 packs- big mistake, most were of a useless size/shape). Maybe 3 or 4 sleepers. Some of the gifts we received came well after ds was born, and by then he'd outgrown the newborn size, so they weren't used at all.

I have friends who got so much stuff from their showers and their families that they hardly had to buy a thing the whole first year. I didn't have that problem!
Our families have been generous to us (I LOVED the co-sleeper my mom got us!), they don't over-do it. My ds also grew so fast I felt like he was constantly outgrowing clothes.

There's a big consignment sale here this weekend, and I'm just trying to plan what items I should look for the most.
I think sleepers- in any size for that first year- is my priority.

How fast did your DS grow though?

My DS1 was over 9lbsm but, gained pretty slow, so he was in 0-3mo clothes until he was 4mos or so. I like having some NB clothes too, I think even most of the 0-3mo clothes were big for the first few weeks.

Dd was in 0-3 clothes for soooo long and things take soooo long here to dry (no dryers! wet winters! no central heating!) that I'm amassing a good amount of onesies, pants & wool sweaters from friends/clients. People are so generous and even 3rd (or more!) hand stuff is still in fabulous condition.
I am planning on sewing and knitting to fill in the gaps/have some special beautiful things for the baby too

As far as advice for the OP - Dd was 5lb9oz though, so no wonder she was in tiny clothes for so long!
And I think dresses for babies are pretty no-fuss for changes, but annoying if they're in the sling a lot as they just bunch up uselessly around their waists.

I had two boys first (both 9 pounders) who grew out of the 0-3 very quickly. My DD came and she was still big (8 1/2 pounds) but grew more slowly than the boys. The 0-3 months clothes lasted until almost 3 months on her. I didn't have much in that size assuming she would outgrow it quickly. I got tired of seeing her in the same outfits over and over

This time I probably have too much for this DD but want to be prepared - I'll have no time to shop with 4 kids in tow.

I have big babies (8-15 and 9-8) and they fit 0-3 for about a month. Then they whizzed through 3-6 and straight on to the 6-12 month size! Anyway, my drawer of NB clothes is about 1/3 0-3 mos and 2/3 3-6 months. I don't mind dressing babies in clothes that are a bit baggy, I think it looks cute.

I'll mostly do onesies. DS fit in the 0-3 stuff for quite a while, so I'll probably start with that size. DS was born in the winter and lived in a diaper most of the time (hot baby), so I am expecting the same from this one. If he arrives late, I'll add baby legs and a sweater to the onesies and we'll be set.

I buy an embarrassing amount of clothing for the kids when they are older, but for those early months, I usually stick to soft, comfy things.

Yeah, it depends on your kids. Mine are on the small side, so fit their 0-3 for quite a while. Also, one piece of advice for those of you who are FTM and buying clothes. Avoid stuff that has buttons on the BACK of the outfit. I made that mistake when I was a FTM and those outfits ended up being ones that I rarely ever put on the baby, b/c they were a PITA to take on and off due to how stupidly they were designed. Funny story is that I had one of those kind of outfits as my son's going home outfit and my DH dressed him BACKWARDS, b/c he couldn't imagine anyone dumb enough to design a baby outfit with buttons on the back, lol.

Agh! Too fast! he's been above 95% for height and weight his whole life. He's been in 2T since last sept (at 15 months), and that's the longest he's been in one size (he'll actually be 2 in June). When he was born, he was in 0-3 for about a month, 3-6 for about 2 months (so he was 2-4 months), and then in 6-12 months beore he was 5 months old. He wore that size from Nov to January, and then started to grow out of that and was in 18-24 months until June. His pants HAD to have elastic waist, and it wasn't until he hit 2T that I actually found jeans that I thought he'd be comfy in. He couldn't wear any pants from Old Navy or The Children's Place, or the Target stuff either. They were just too skinny. I'm having much better luck finding clothes that fit him well now that he's even out a bit.

I found some good sales today! Garage sales are huge in MN, it's almost comical to watch the onslaught of people rummaging through people's garages.

One thing that irks me though is people who mark their prices like they're a store having a minor sale. Seriously? You think I'm going to pay $5 for a USED sleeper???? Not this chickie!

I'd recommend getting a couple of things of preemie size sleepers and onesies, don't open them but have them on hand. If needed, they can be quickly washed and dried. I never would have dreamed my son would be 15 days early and only be 6.2 and 19.5". He was in preemie clothes and diapers for a month and we didn't have either when he was born (born at home). My poor sister got sent on a scavenger hunt late at night to track down clothes and diapers.

all i can say is thak goodness im having a boy because i would be buying EVERYTHING if it were a girl. girl stuff is sooooooo cute! boy cothes, not so much. i do like the newborn sizes because i like somethig to fit for the first month or 2. i mean, just some onsies which i happen to have 35 of at the moment (and that just size 0-3) because we have gotten so many hand me downs. maybe jut start with a handful of them and get some more if needed? or the little dresse sem like they could be used for a long time. when they get too short, just put some pants under them and use it for a longer shirt. ooohhh and please let me live through you and get some of those little diaper cover panty things wih the ruffles on the butt! or the tights with the ruffls on the butt! sheesh. like i said, good thing im not having a girl.

Oh- just b/c you are always picking them up and holding them, dresses just always ride up, pretty much to their armpits, very bunchy. Might not annoy you, who knows, and maybe not such a big deal for a summer baby.
