I've got a 1 month old babyguy now, and the "new normal" includes three types of ow! that I wanted to get some opinions on:

1) Every time he latches on. It looks like a good latch, but it hurts like hell for a minute or a few, then either he finds his rhythm or it just stops hurting, not sure which.

2) This 'let-down' thing: is it supposed to hurt like burning/stabbing every time?

3) I drink some beer or wine (gasp! I know! But I've got bottles and bottles pumped for such occasions!). Every time I drink alcohol (and we're talking one to two beers before I'm done, these days), there's the burning/stabbing boobs again.

Notes: there's nothing visually wrong with the equipment. No spots, cracks, or anything else to see. Baby has no weirdness going on with his mouth, at least not that can be seen.

Is this all just normal? Yuck, if it is!

the latch-on pain can be normal for the first several weeks. i never felt let-down really but i know some people do and they do describe it as burning. my mom said it felt like little rocks trickling down the ducts...ewwww.

the good news is over time you will feel let down less and less.

the only suggestion i have is drop those bottles in case they're causing any nipple confusion. even a slight shift in the latch could cause more pain. 1-2 beers and then nursing should be fine--just nurse as you drink and then the let down pain won't hurt as much!

Yeah, that, for most of it.

I did feel let down. Let down pain for me early on felt like straight pins being pulled through my nipples. I thought how the heck can any one stand this for long?? But it did go away - whew. And that was with my son... I *think* with the girls I either didn't have it at all or had it way less.

Drinking and nursing in moderation is not a problem. If you have the stabbing pain while drinking, the drinking is triggering the let down... either from being relaxed or from the joy buzz or something. I would just nurse, not pump.
