My sister asked me to come and ask for help for her.

She stopped pumping for her son (she EP'ed a year for each of her 3 boys) about a month or so ago. She had battled thrush the last few months and it seemed to be all gone.

Now her right nipple/areola is very painful to the touch (but not itchy, but she never had itching with the thrush) and the ducts (the dots on the areola) are all looking "cheesey". I don't know how to describe it but there is a white film on her nipple and white cheesey stuff coming out of the ducts. Her other nipple looks normal (she showed me, in desperation!).

Is this thrush? If not what IS it?

She is on vacation visiting us and can't go to her regular doc until next week at the earliest, and he's not up on bf info, so I don't know how helpful he'd be... he's a family doc. Anyway, she's done diflucan I think a dozen times over the past few months when she was trying to get rid of it.... she's doing gentian violet and has done nystatin as well...

I saw this Kerry's Herbals kit... is this what she needs??

It doesn't sound like the thrush symptoms I had, but that doesn't mean anything. I wonder though if it's been unresponsive to diflucan and gv if it's something else - like a staph infection. It sounds like she really needs to have it cultured and find out for sure.

I didn't have any cheesy discharge but my nipples hurt bad, they didn't itch. My nipples felt like when I was first starting to nurse... but it never went away, if that helps at all. She definitly should get it looked at if the GV doesn't work, every one has told me that GV is the fail safe for getting rid of thrush. I have yet to talk to ANYONE who tried GV and said it didn't get rid of the thrush... it might not be thrush.

That really doesn't sound like thrush. Thrush does make the nipples hurt and burn, but I've never had or heard of any discharge, and I've been battling/researching it for 2 months now.

She may have mastitis. Does the whole breast hurt? I think warm compresses are good for mastitis, but don't quote me on that 'cause I didn't have that, (thank goodness).

If she ends up having some sort of infections and takes antibiotics, tell her to treat for the thrush at the same time (even if she doesn't think she has it yet) It sounds like she has tendencies for it and that's why most of us get it in the 1st place.

Yogurt is your friend!!!
Acidopholis (sp?) is a wonderful thing.

Best of luck to her, it doesn't sound fun.

Okay, now you've heard from me, I tried GV 3 times and it didn't work for thrush.

I used it for 5 days and my babies tongue is still white. The thrush subsided a bit but didn't go completly away.

At least it did something, which is more than I can say for the Nystatin.

The best thing so far has been lotrimin in the morn and eve, and washing with vinager water after each feeding. Oh ya and the Acidopholis (sp) :}
