thrush?

793 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  anothermama
My son is on formula and is 3 1/2 weeks old. His tongue appears to be coated with formula...........it varies daily. We first noticed it when we changed the formula to a liquid formula.......we then changed back to a powdered formula and it went away for a few days and then came back.

My MIL is concerned it may be thrush, but I thought it looked raised and usually was on the inside of the cheeks and gums...????

Any thoughts?

My DS was also bottle fed from a young age - I remember taking him to the ped once and she asked if his tongue always looked so white! But he later got thrush after going on antibiotics, so I got to learn the difference (lucky me!). The thrush actually looked like blisters on the insides of his lips. The white tounge (I think) was just residue from the formula. If it's just his tounge, I wouldn't worry.

I know you don't need any more stress on your plate right now, Anothermama! Hang in there!

My son wasn't formula fed, but he had the same white coated tongue. I had thought it was coated with milk for the longest time, but it turns out it was thrush. The way that you can tell is-- if it is thrush you will NOT be able to scrape it of the tongue. Also, does he seem very gassy (having loud farts) or fussy when eating? That can be another way to tell.
It sounds like thrush to me. There is a wide variation of symptoms with candida. It would also help explain the colic you've been dealing with lately. Yeast overgrowth in his belly could definitely cause some serious pain and crying/screaming. Does he suffer from diaper rash, too?

I agree, my ds had a white tounge and it was thrush, Nasty stuff, thrush
with ds #1 I had to throw out all his nipples and soothers ( he was also bottle fed) , blech........ it was stressful, and expensive.
I ended up using that geniton violet(sp?)
Good luck!
You know...I was just reading through your other thread and first of all ---major

Second, it sounds like your son's crying and wrenching in pain just might be from the thrush. My ds had the exact same thing. he started getting uber colicky around three weeks. It was awful. He would just wrench around like he was in pain. Didn't want to eat, wouldn't sleep. All he had was a white coated tongue. My midwife said he was fine, just fussy

It turns out he was highly allergic to dairy (still is) and this was causing the thrush and stomach pains. It took about 2 weeks for the milk proteins to leave his system, but after that he was much better.

I'm not saying this is exactly what's going on with your little guy, but perhaps he is allergic to his formula? Does he have dairy or soy?

Anyway, if you need any help with the thrush, feel free to PM me. It can be a real PITA. It took us 2 rounds of nystatin, a round of diflucan and a trip to an ear nose and throat doc to finally get rid of it.

I hope you are doing ok. Hang in there. We're all here for you

You guys rock..........thank you.

I feel horrible that I it never even crossed my mind! So much about a formula fed babe is new to me that I assumed it was just a bi-product of that!

You know, his breath has been rather........strong lately. Maybe thats another symptom. Yeesh.

Anyhow, we'll venture to the Ped's office today. Send good thoughts.

Oh.......with my son, when I stopped breastfeeding, he was on a regular formula and he seemed MISERABLE on it..........so we switched to soy........still seemed miserable. I came here and many moms said their children had problems with the brand (Similac) and that they'd had success with Good Start.....soooooooo......we switched to Good Start regular and he seems to be ok with it. He's pooping better and he's gassy but the gas doesn't seem to bother him too too much. I'm reluctant to go switching again, and I read in one of my Sears books that babes shouldn't be on Soy unless they are truly truly allergic to milk, not simply for gassiness, because it's a plant based protein, which made sense to me. I'll ask the Ped about it today, but I'm probably going to try other things and only switch formula as a last resort.

Anyways.......thanks so much.

Before we finally worked through our breastfeeding problems, our ped never took it seriously when I told her DD was allergic to milk-based formula.
She had us try the lacto-free kind, which helped some, but not as much as soy did.
If your baby seems better on soy formula, perhaps that would be better for him.
At three years old, she is still mildly allergic to dairy. I can just imagine what sort of immunological problems she would have now if I had followed doc's advice and kept giving her milk-based formula that she was allergic to...

No, he didn't seem better on soy..........in fact, he seems best thus far on the Good Start (knock wood!).

Just got back from the ped........it's thrush..........
