Hi ladies. Here to pick your fabulous mama brains again:

Sage has oral thrush, and I believe my left nipple is infected as well. I called the ped and he called in some Nystatin. I have done some internet reearch and I think I know what I am up against.

Question for you all is this: Is the Nystatin necessary or is there an alternative? I am aware of teh dietary changes and hygiene attention I should be paying -- don't know if those are useful in addition to the med or instead of.

Anyone have any insight?

Can't tell you all how much I appreciate your feedback.

I would do all three -- diet, hygiene, and anti-fungals. The nystatin should work fairly well the only drawback is that you really should wash it off your nipples before nursing. I just realized you probably have the Nystatin that can be ingested. I really don't like that because it is in a sugar base. Yeast loves sugar. I would tend to use gentian violet instead.

Nystatin has been so oversued, many moms do not have luck with it as the yeast is evolving to be resistant to it. No, you do not have to wash it off. You would need ointment for your breasts and liquid to swab the baby's mouth.

Many moms have much better luck with Diflucan.

Do a search in the bfing forums for thrush for lots more alt med and home care ideas.

we did gentian violet. we were purple but it worked . i also was amazon woman that week (bare chested) and boiled all my bras and nursing pads in water with vinegar.

it came back again a few months later and we ended up doing diflucan to get rid of it once and for all

We had thrush something awful!!! It was extremely painful to me, but didn't both ds so much. The doc had ds take diflucan for 10 days and me for 7 days. It worked like a charm!!! We had tried the genetian violet too, but I think we just had it too bad for it to work, I'm sure it would work with a milder case.

BOIL, BOIL, BOIL!! We boiled everything! I ended up using disposable nursing pads and throwing them away as soon as they were wet. We washed bras, t-shirts and almost everything else on hot. If we used paci's, bottles, nipples, etc. I boiled it all for 20 min each day.

Whre do you get Gentian Violet? Is it over the counter or presciption?

Our case, it seems, is pretty mild. My researhc indicates that if I had it on my breasts, I would be in excruciating pain!?!?!?!? I am not -- does this mean I don't have it? How do I treat myself? The ped ordered Nystatin for the babe but didn't mention me.

I am so ready to get on this sh**. I do not want to be fighting thrush for the next month. or more

I wouldn't bother with the nystatin either. It didn't cure us at all, although it did clear up the boys' yeasty diaper rash somewhat. If you do decide to use it, don't just give it to your baby 3 or 4 times a day, but instead just use a swab and coat the thrush areas in your baby's mouth after every nursing. I think that is how to make it most effective (I could never manage to follow this advice, so perhaps that played a role in Nystatin's ineffectiveness). I had thrush for my babies' first six months. They had it a couple of times (sympoms, I mean), and for a few days Jasper refused to nurse because he was in so much pain .

I did gentian violet and diflucan several times (my poor liver). The diflucan worked fairly well. It would clear it up in me, but then it would come back when I stopped taking it. The gentian violet worked very well on the boys' oral thrush, but not on my nipples.

I highly suggest taking a good brand of acidophilus with bifidus several times a day. It is expensive, but worked just as well (if not better) than the diflucan for me, and is much less toxic.

I ended up getting rid of my thrush when I got rid of our kitty (whom I was allergic to). Make sure there isn't anything in your life that could be supressing your immune system. Yeast infections are generally a sign of a supressed immune system.

Best of luck! Hang in there!

Ah the yeasty beasties....

Bubba (ds) and I battled them for MONTHS! We did the works (nystatin, diflucan, gentian violent, acidophilus, boiling, vinegar and combinations of the aforementioned. They'd work for a couple of weeks and then we'd be back to square one.

My Dr. suggested that I might be a carrier and so the two of use were passing it back and forth. IT didn't actually bother me though! No cracking, no pain. Nor did it bother ds to any great degree. He had NO problems nursing, just a very white little mouth.

Dr said as long as he was gaining weight and not overly fussy, and it wasn't bothering me, to just let it alone. Her words were "Eventually he won't have it". And it worked. After his 6 month b day, miraculously, no more thrush!
