My 12 month-old DD is a thumbsucker, which I am fine with. She doesn't suck it excessively, mainly just when she's tired or upset. She sucks her thumb when she goes to sleep too, usually. In the past week or so I've noticed it getting really red and puffy, just irritated looking. Now the whole thumb looks really chapped and dry, red, puffy, and the tip of her thumb looks really painful, like there is a blood blister underneath the skin and possibly the skin is broken (or getting ready to). She won't let me near it but is playing normally with her hands and still sucking her thumb, so it must not hurt very bad or she'd be a lot more tender with it.

I've got an appt with the GP on Friday but in the meantime, is there anything I can apply or do to encourage healing?

Hm. Any thing you could apply would wind up in her mouth, so I don't think so. Try to keep it as dry as possible in-between sucking. That's probably the best thing.
