Mark's been exhibiting some very strange facial/mouth behaviors for the last few days, and I'm beginning to wonder if it's not a tic. I don't suspect seizure activity at all, b/c he's doing this while we play together, and he never skips a beat, he even does it while talking. It's like a facial grimace, as if he's trying to surpress a yawn, but he'll do it 10 or more times in less than a minute or two. I can't catch it on camera or video, it's too fast.

He has other repetitive behaviors that I know are sensory related (he flips his fingers against his head about once very 5 minutes, for instance) but I've never seen the frequent repetition, so that's why I'm suspicious. There's no nuerological reason to be concerned about tics in general, is there?

I have many tics (both vocal/motor) and my son has developed several over the past year (again both vocal/motor). My daughter has recently started a vocal tic but no motor tic yet (I say yet because obviously we are a tic-y family hehe). None of their tics appear to be stims and the neuropsych wasn't concerned with them.

I imagine that in some cases, tics could be of neurological concern but I don't know what other 'symptoms' would need to be present to cause concern. I guess I'd classify it in the "ask to be sure" category.

My son developed a tic disorder after a vaccine....hard blinking, mouth stretching, eyebrow raising, nose rubbing. I have been doing a lot of research, and it seems that there are a few possible associations between chemical sensitivities/virus and tics:
Aluminum toxicity
Food dye (yellow, in particular)
MSG
Streptococcus (google Pandas syndrome)
low magnesium
allergies

You might be interested in the Feingold Diet program to help eliminate some possible triggers. there are DAN! doctors who can do bio-medical testing to help find possible causes, and prescribe natural treatments. Good luck!

That depends.

Something that looks like a tic can be dystonia, seizures, etc.

It's really hard to know just by looking and describing.

Do his neck muscles tense up when he's doing it? Does he realize he's doing it?

I have what sounds like a similar tic with my neck/mouth muscles, along with many other tics that come and go. They are not stims and I can control them if I become aware of them enough.

No, it's really just his mouth that he's tensing up. I did wonder if it's just something fun and good feeling he's doing with his mouth for the sensory pleasure of it, because he does it while playing and never skips a beat or looks like he's zoned out, and sometimes he makes a little "huh huh" sound in conjunction with it. While doing it yesterday he was building lego towers and he kept right on placing the legos, walking around, etc. while doing so. There are ocasionally times when he'll tense his whole head, does that make sense? Just for a quick few seconds and no more than 2 or 3 times in a minute. I have wondered about absence seizures in the past, but these don't set off any alarm bells for me.

Uptown, he's not had a vax for over a year, and his diet doesn't include food dyes or msg. He's on several supplements and we've done Fiengold-like food restrictions in the past. I want him allergy tested but couldn't get a referral from our pedi (whole different story). A dan doctor is not something we'd consider, but the idea of allergies does interest me. Thanks for your response.

Is he on any medications? Maybe a side effect?

Just a few supplements - a digestive enzyme, a kid's multivitamin, Culturelle probiotic, Coromega fish oil and melatonin at night. He's been taking all of these since January/February of this year, and I've never seen this behavior before. So far, I've not seen him do it today.
