I bought the ingredients for this yesterday.....

Family Dollar had both the Sun products. The oxygen wash was $3.50. The detergent was $2.75.

I bought the super washing soda at Kroger, and that was $2.79.

I bought the Borax at IGA and that was $3.79 for a large box.

I also bought a large, lidded paint bucket from Home Depot for $3.24 so I can mix and store a big batch.

I'll update with more information once I've mixed it, figured out the cost per use, and used it!

Bumping up this thread....

There is an improved version of this Recipe.... Its using 1 part dawn Dishsoap and 1 part Improved Tide CLone for each load. Awesome stain fighting and really gets the grease and stains out without having to pretreat as much!!!

For Each load...

1 Tablespoon Improved Tide Clone (1 part each borax, washing soda, oxygen cleaner)

and

1 Tablespoon non concentrated Original Blue Dawn

5.3 cents per load total. Works really well!

If you want to try 1/2 Tablespoon of each you could to save even more money

I use a modified recipe of the fels naphtha one:

1 part washing soda
1 part borax
1 part Dr. Bronners liquid soap
1/2 part oxy clean

Mix together so that the liquid is incorporated and broken up. My detergent resembles a crumb mixture.

We LOVE it! I was paying too much for a more natural kind and we hate the smell of most detergents. We use the peppermint dr. Bronners and I mainly use liquid because I couldnt be bothered to grate the bar.

Hmmm, I might try this recipe, would just need to pick up the oxy cleaner. I've been happy with my recipe for the most part (essentially 1 part grated sunlight soap bar, 1 part borax, 1 part washing soda) except that the grated soap bar doesn't mix consistently with the borax/soda. Maybe I'll try the Dr. Bronners and use the oxy clean for extra cleaning boost!
