My kids and I are planning to tie-dye tommorrow and I have seen that some mamas have dyed diapers. Which ones are okay to dye? Can I dye covers or will it ruin them?? The covers I am talking about are Bummis SWW. Or should I just stick to dying some of the prefolds and thats it?? Can I dye some fitteds too? I want to make sure I am not going to ruin the dipes.

I also have another question to any mama's that have tie-dye'd diapers, does the color "bleed" onto the other diapers when it is wet and sitting in the pail??

TIA!

Oh I have Rainbow rock tie-dye that has soda ash and it came in a kit from Joann's

nak

i tie dyed my diapers.

diapers did not/do not bleed on others in pail. (I also washed/rinsed them repeatedly after dyeing to ensure no bleed later.) (I kept washing them til the water in the hottest water possible was clear.) Took a bunch of washes, though. like 4, I think.

I used the same dye you have - I dyed 11 diapers with the bigger kit - it had 5 bottles and 5 refills of dye. I bought add'l soda ash from pool supply since I followed paul burch's website instructions on tie dyeing. - do google search - i can't remember if it's pburch.com or .org or what.

i did not dye my bummis. they're a different material and i didn't want color loss over time.

i used dylon perm. dye, as well - followed package instructions. each bag of dye is enough for 2-3 diapers. (for thorough saturation)

i don't have time right now, but if you do a search for some of my previous posts, i'm pretty sure i gave details on how i did the dyeing. - check out my website to see my diapers.

i love my tie dyed diapers!
:

oh, yeah - to make tie dyeing fun - tie up the clean dry diapers in advance. then all you have to do is soak the diapers in soda ash for a minimum of 20 minutes, then wring out, then dye away. . . . . .

wrap in saran wrap for 4-24 hours, then unwrap, wash and rewash til no more bleeding. see pburch for details - i don't want to steer you wrong.

wear gloves and clothes you and the kids don't mind staining.

one final thought - your feet will probably turn a weird shade of purple - esp if you do it barefoot. . ..

WEAR GLOVES!!! the soda ash has ph of 11 - you don't want to get burns. . . ..

hth.

Wow your diapers look great!! We did it last night and nope my feet aren't purple but my pointer finger and thumb on my left hand are
I guess I got a hole in my glove!!

Since I had never done it before I did 8 diapers and we each did a t-shirt. They are in the washer now. I am going to try to photograph them later today with the webcam since our digi is broken. Hopefully it works and I can show them off!!

Oh yeah, Joanns had some soda ash in it's own box next to all the individual dyes from the same company. So if I want to do it again (and I do
)I can get it there.

Thanks for your help!

Oh, they look SOOOOOOOOO cool!! You are going to smile every time you put one of those diapers on the baby. I guarantee it! My first batch of diapers, I kept using th e m first, then using my 'plain' white ones last. So, I HAD to dye the rest, lol.

I have FIVE white diapers left and one of them, I'm slowly, very slowly (in my spare time, lol) elastic banding marbles all over it - and then will tie dye it. have no idea how it will turn out, but I thought it would be fun to experiment.

the remaining four, I decided i like fanfold banded diapers best - so that's what I'll do with them. I plan on doing them sometime this weekend.

Enjoy your new new diapers!
