after a string of so-so hair cuts at those strip mall type places (great clips, sport clips.. etc) DH now gets his hair cut at a local barber shop. He likes it because you get a free pint of microbrew on tap with your hair cut
they do a few extras with your haircut too, like a little neck and shoulder massage with a little massagy tool, they vaccuum your head to get all the little hairs out, they lather and shave around the back of the neck.. etc.

Last time he got a great hair cut. So we went in again, and DH said he wanted the back and sides short, and to barely even trim the front. the barber (different guy from last time) went WAY too short in the front. he just kept cutting and cutting. DH was not pleased, but in no way rude. In fact, it is entirely possible that this guy didn't even know how upset DH was. I did, because I know him.. but he's not an explosive type guy. I'm pretty sure the guy knew that he was not too happy with the cut.

DH went out to the car to get a checkbook and the guy was like "Wow, his (DH's) hair just sort of sticks straight up!" I said "Yeah, that's what happens when it gets cut too short- it just sticks straight up". and he said "I wish I would have known that!"
The other barber was watching him sweep up the floor and said "Wow, thats a lot of hair!" DH's barber just made an annoyed noise, like it was someone else's fault that he cut it too short?

So anyway, long story short, the cut came out to $17. DH wrote a check for $21. The guy seemed annoyed, like the tip wasn't big enough? for a cut I'm pretty sure he knew DH wasn't satisfied with..

Is that a crappy tip? how much do you normally tip, regardless of whether or not you actually liked the cut?

In that case, he's lucky he got any tip. If it had been me, he wouldn't have.

I agree I would have never left a tip.

I think that 20 percent is pretty standard... I had a discussion with my hairdresser about it once. A lot of people don't tip at all, which is rude, but $4 on a $17 haircut is more than 20%, and considering that it wasn't a good cut...

Yeah, a bit over 20% is what I was thinking- I think we normally do closer to 25% for hair cuts, but since he wasn't happy..
To be clear, I like the cut.. just that its too short for DH's preference.
@Italiamom- it was Bond Street Barbershop

It is more than 20%, not rude at all.

I usually give $3-5 tip with haircuts. That was REALLY rude of the barber to have an attitude.A tip is not mandatory and he is lucky he got anything...even the $17 for the cut.

Will your dh go back there and request only the barber he likes?I would do that, and let them know you were not happy 1. with the cut and 2. with the attitude.

Yeah I hope he does. We like going there because its a local spot, and I much prefer supporting a local business to a mega chain.. I hope he's not put off the place all together. The thing is, we can't remember the other guy's name! This one we know and will avoid from now on!
There are a few other barbers there, so maybe he can just try another one next time.
