I'd like to replace my plastic cutting boards with wood, but have no idea what qualities to look for in a board. It needs to be relatively inexpensive--sorry, no Boos block for me

And when I clean it, can I really run it under hot water, scrub with soap, etc? or will that warp the board? FWIW...I do NOT cut meat on my cutting boards.

The board-type cheap ones that are available places like Wal-mart always warp or split in my experience, even if they are "hardwood".

We are really happy with the laminated-strip one we finally got. It's the kind with different colored wood. It is a lot thicker and has held up very well. A friend made it, so I don't know what a basic one would cost new, but it does fine washed daily.

All of my wood boards have been gifts, can you put it on your christmas list?
and, to take care of mine, I rinse it off with hot water and sometimes soapy water, depending on whether I cut meat or bread or onions on it last, then I lean it up to dry. If you don't lean it against something when it dries, then the water will pool underneath it, or in the grooves and you will see cracking.
I've seen nice wooden boards at Big Lots and Tuesday Mornings.

To clean mine, I spray lightly with vinegar water (which I use to clean everything) and wipe it up. I never put raw meat on it so that's not an issue. If it needs scrubbing, I sprinkle salt on it, then spray with the vinegar water and scrub. Works great.
