Hi, I am preparing for my first homebirth coming up sometime in Sept/Oct, it will be a VBAC as well (I hope). I have been interviewing midwives but I'm unsure if I want a doula there as well. I had a really traumatic hospital birth and one of the worst things about it was ALL the freaking people! I'm one of those people who would happily find a cave in the woods to give birth all by myself. On the one hand I just want to be alone, on the other hand I think if I had had a doula the first time around I could have avoided a c/s since I would have had an advocate for myself and some labor support. But will the presence of a supportive mw be enough? So, I'm just really on the fence about this one. We are planning on getting a sitter or asking a friend over to help watch DD while I'm in labor so that if I want DH he can be there for me, so that isnt' an issue.

Any thoughts?

I think there is a huge difference between hospital midwives and hb midwives. When at the hospital you don't get to see the mw very much, and you really need someone to advocate for you between the mw and all the L&D Nurses. With a hb though the md usually comes somewhat early on and is there the whole time, with you as her only focus. Then you also have the apprentice or in our case the secondary mw. However, if your mw lives far away then I would hire a doula to be with you during the beginning.

Well, we had a private birth center birth with two fabulous midwives and a doula. That was it - me, my husband, and those three. Even though I had wonderful midwives who were there just for me the entire time my husband and I both think that our doula was invaluable. Of course, everyone is different in their needs but it you can afford it I say a birth doula can only be a good thing.
