We seem to eat in the car a bit when we go places. We drive far to get to where we have to go. I need healthy and non-messy snack ideas. My kids are tired of crackers and pretzels all the time.

They love granola bars but those are expensive so I'd like to start making my own bars.

Help me think of things I might not be thinking of. I like the idea of morning smoothies but that has the potential of spilling. So nothing sticky, runny, nothing that can melt, or be spilled. Crumbs are easily vacuumed.

I plan on keeping a small cooler in the car.

Rice cakes (they even have sweet varieties), sesame sticks, carrot sticks, raisins and other dried fruits (do those count as sticky?), popcorn, muffins, biscuits, cubed cheese, cubed meats with crackers.

Some of those things are a little 'choke-y', I am not sure the ages of your children.

Something that is a little sticky and potentially messy but could be ok - like tortilla roll ups (we spread cream cheese on a tortilla along with some shredded carrot and roll them up, then cut into pinwheels). You can do it with pb too, the trick is doing a very thin smear of cream cheese/pb, just enough to hold it together without it being enough to glop out and make a mess.

I have crackers in the car for emergencies, but usually pack something if we are going somewhere more than an hour away. My kids like; muffins, carmel rice cakes (they really like Aldi's Fit and Active brand), dry fruit, plain bagels, graham crackers, and, if we have it, junky dry cereal. I try not to give them anything that can be dropped, missed and forgotten until it rots, like grapes. But I do let them have bananas and apples. Water only in the car too... no secret rotten spilled juice (BLECH!).

almonds and other tree nuts

Fruit leather

veggie chips

carrot sticks or coins (I steam them with a little garlic and salt--a very little--if the kids don't like them too crunchy)

We eat Larabars in the car all the time. They're 1.29, so yeah, not cheap. We eat those when we need something substantial with a bit of protein

Apple Cinnamon Ricecakes
pretzels
dry cereal
veggie bootie
veggie stix
graham crackers
