Hi Everyone, I'm 16 weeks along and am a little worried because I haven't yet begun to show. Is this normal? I heard the heartbeat a few weeks ago, so I know the baby is in there, but now I'm paranoid it isn't growing right! Thoughts?

Apparently it's not something to worry about, although I'm in the same worried boat as you. I show a bit when I'm standing, but when i lie down my belly seems as empty and squishy as ever (not that i'm that squishy, but when i'm relaxed and laying down it seems just falttish and normal). No ability to feel uterus yet at all. I also heard a heartbeat a couple weeks ago but am starting to get panicky again.

I am showing to beat the band (17 weeks). But I've had a baby before, and my body type is designed to show easily, I think.

My cousin-in-law is also pg. She didn't tell anyone until she was 24 weeks, and I had only guessed for sure about a month before that (and that's cause I see her 2-3x/week, had pg on the brain, and am of a suspicious nature.) She is now 34 weeks and if I've had big meal, we look about the same amount pregnant. The difference, of course, being that my belly is MOSTLY displaced guts at this point, while hers is almost entirely baby. According to our midwives, she's measuring right-on for her weeks and has been all along. I don't know where she hid that baby for the first 20 weeks, but it WASN'T visible!

As to feeling the uterous - has your health-care provider felt it and showed you where to feel it? As I said, I've done this before and I thought I was pretty good at feeling it last time, but I couldn't find it this time until after my midwife showed me where it was - I was aiming way too low and so I wasn't feeling it.

A lot of it has to do with the shape of your torso, how tall you are, whether you were over/under/normal weight before pregnancy, and so on. In other words...there are tons of factors that influence this, and your body will do what it needs to do.

I am petite and VERY short waisted and I definitely have a bit of a tummy at 14 weeks (not so much that someone who didn't know me would think I was pregnant, but a big difference from my pre-pregnancy flat tummy--at Thanksgiving, everyone kept telling me I'd "lost my waist", whatever that means). It makes sense to me that I would show early, even with a first baby, b/c of my short-waistedness and size--that baby literally has nowhere to go but out! But I've known taller, lankier, bigger-boned women who didn't really start to show until their fifth month.

So I wouldn't worry about it...if you've heard the heartbeat and your mw thinks everything is okay, I would assume it is.
