my baby is 6.5 months old...basically ebf. I'm wanting to delay solids bc we have a family history of many allergies and we've had tummy issues w/ him since 2 wks old. He still doesn't have normal seeming bowel movements. He usually goes poo every 12 days or so, and when he does go it seems very painful for him and it's always overflowing. Also, his last few poos have been quit thick-which I don't get bc he wasn't eating anything but bb milk. Except for the one two days ago, which was very mucusy and green, with some thick pieces in it. I had his hemoglobin tested at 6 months and it was 12.9, the dr. said it was perfect. I read somewhere a sign of iron deficiency is having a blue tint to the white of the eyes. I actually noticed b4 reading that, that his eye whites were not as bright white as they used to be. I always noticed how white and clear his eye whites were. So i've been thinking maybe I should start giving him some solids, at least bites of what I'm eating. So yesterday I let him suck on a prune and he ate about half of it (he has 2 teeth). Today he went poo again (huge suprise, bc it's usually at least a wk), but it was very mucusly still, mostly yellow this time, and had pieces of prune in it. I'm wondering if that should be a sign that he's not ready for solids yet. If he were ready would the pieces of prunes have broken down,...or is this totally normal? Could he be allergic to the prune bc I gave him some prunes at 5 months to try and help him poo....they didn't help AT ALL at the time, just made his poo thick so I didn't give him anymore until now. Thanks for any replys.

Green mucusy poop and the other tummy troubles make me wonder about food intolerances via your BM. Have you tried eliminating dairy & soy or other common allergens? Given the family history, I wouldn't be surprised if he weren't suffering from some sort of intolerance.

And I would definitely hold off on solids for a while, at least until he's met ALL the developmental readiness signs.

i should have added that...Yes, I'm allergic to dairy so I don't eat it, nor soy, chocolate, try to avoid corn, try to limit wheat, eat some brown rice stuff. i've had a heck of a time trying to figure out what TO eat. bc his bowel movements can be over a wk each time, and he's been bloated most of the time, it's hard to know what it is bothering him. I feel like there's nothing i can eat. I was down to just oatmeal for wks and it was still horrible. so i figured it was gluten...long story...things are better now then they used to be..Another note...what about the iron issue. do i need to think about that...his hemglobin was 12.9, perfect, but does that really tell me very much about his iron level? could his iron still be low? He seems so eager and fanatic about eating other stuff. when I'm eating he'll attack my hand to get my food and knaw on it likes it's amazing stuff. thanks for your response.

Pieces of food in poop is totally normal for babies and toddlers.

I'm not sure why you think his iron is low.

If he's sitting unassisted and grabbing food- I say let him have some. If not, wait awhile.

thanks for u'r reply. sometimes we make such a big deal about simple things, but I'm just trying to do the right thing for my baby. I'm wondering about his iron, bc in my search to see if it's ok to delay solid I found an article about iron and that a symptom of iron def. is a blue tint to the white of the eyes. his used to be really white and now they have a blue tint. maybe that's normal though. he's been sitting unassited since 5 months and wants the fruit I eat. thanks for telling me that the pieces are normal. I had no idea.

Poop timing and color and consistency all sound normal for an EBF baby.

Iz is the same age and EBF. She's gone up to a week without pooping and when she does poop, it's more pasty than liquidy. No worries from the doc. And when she hasn't gone poopy for awhile, boy o boy do we get a gusher!

Like the pp said, whatever solids they do, the chunks will show up in their poop. If you've ever eaten beans or carrots or such and fully chewed them, you'll see chunks in your poop too. Sorry if TMI...

So you're good and all is well and the poop is normal. Sounds like you're practicing a bit of baby-led weaning too! Good for you.

I agree w/ this green and mucousy poop is not normal. I would be perusing the allergy forum.
