To wash or not to wash

So, when can we start washing all the baby clothes. I feel like I want to start getting stuff done and out of the way for the new baby. I have a TON of bags to go through in the garage to get baby stuff together. I just don't want to have to wash everything over again. When is everyone else going to wash everything? I guess a month before would probably be ideal, I just don't know if I can wait that long.
Maybe I should sort all the clothes out now, then wash them later?!?! Just to feel like I'm getting stuff done.

I do most of my baby-shopping at garage sales, so I have to know what I need early.

But I hate that musty smell clean laundry gets after it's been sitting in a cupboard or drawer too long. I just couldn't stand it on my newborn.
I've already done it
. I like to organize ahead of time. I waited until 7 months (when we moved into our new house) with baby #1. But I waited too long with #2, and I just ended up using them "as is" out of the plastic storage bins and it was fine. As long as the clothes are in a drawer or closet (somewhere where they won't collect dust), and you don't have pet hair issues, then I don't see why you couldn't do it now. It's so much fun!

Good question. With dd I went from working ungodly hours to 2 wks of bedrest to delivery so I never got to wash anything. My mom washed the onsies we had and after that I washed her stuff after we were home and as she grew enough to fit into stuff other than onsies & blankies. Can't wait to dig through her old stuff. I'm making myself wait until after the u/s though.
So does this washing thing apply to new items too? I don't know if I am just paranoid. Would you wash items that are new before you use them for baby, including sheets and blankets?
I DEFINITELY wash new items, whether for baby or anyone else. Besides the chemicals used to set the dye in many fabrics, think of all the people who have pawed through the clothing at the store before you!

I am planning on waiting a bit until it is warm enough to get the things on the cloths line (especially the diapers). But I also can't wait to go through the boxes, it has been 4 years since I have had a newborn

Okay, maybe it's just me, but I pulled out the 0-3 month clothes from ds and I can't get excited enough to even sort through for the "keep" and "sell" piles let alone wash them all

For some reason, I still feel like I have TONS of time left, but really I have 18-ish weeks. And, if this one comes a teeny bit early like ds, then I have less than 17 weeks left.

But, we are going shopping this weekend in hopes of finding a crib set for this babe. Who knows if the crib will even be used, but ds now uses his crib every night and LOVES his crib blanket - so I can't really just use his - I think he'd be a little ticked at me!

Absolutely. A friend of mine got scabies after a big shopping trip trying on lots & lot of clothes at the mall. YUCK!
I washed all of the items I put away from dd#1 18 months ago. They were stored in plastic bins. I don't mean to sound lazy but why do I have to wash them again?

I'm not, but that's me. It will have been 2 1/2 years. I just wash anything that has those ugly yellowish marks that sometimes appear after being in storage for a while.

The only reason I do is so they smell fresh and clean

I've sorted and will wash all the gender neutral stuff about 6 weeks before this babe is due....and then hopefully while I'm in the hospital having the baby my mom or dh will watch the appropriate sex stuff.

And speaking of the yucky yellow marks, does anyone have a magic formula to remove them? On anything all white I'll use bleach, but some of dd's cute non-white stuff has the yellowing and I don't want to bleach. Any advice?
I'd try OxyClean or putting them out in the sun for a day. Otherwise, color-safe bleach.
I used some stuff that I use to clean up our dogs accidents, it's awesome and cleans up fresh blood etc and takes the yellow out great, but I can't remember the name of it.
I found it at Walmart in the pet section (it's an enzymatic cleaner.)

Is it a spray or a liquid you dab on? Just wondering if I might already have some @ home!
