"Billions of plastic bags are choking our planet. All of these "free" bags ultimately cost both consumers and the environment plenty:

* Each year billions of bags end up as ugly litter.
* Eventually they break down into tiny toxic bits polluting our soil, river, lakes and oceans
* Production requires vast amounts of oil.
I'd like to... This morning on the radio though the DJs were talking about it and they said they had "issues" trying to use them, like the cashiers would give them an attitude or refuse to use them because of sanitary reasons or whatever. Do stores have policies against using these?

Eta: also they said that some stores will think you are trying to steal stuff by bringing them...

Oh! And if you use reusable bags, what do you use to line your small garbage cans (like in the bathroom)?

I do a lot of the time, and I feel guilty when I dont but the cashiers totally give you an attitude. They like to use their spin-around-multi-bag-holder-loader-upper-thing. I always rush to try and bag my stuff myself so I dont catch the attitude. Good Luck, I just sewed up a really cute grocery bag today, It looks way superior to the ones I have been using.

I use my canvas bags whenever I remember.

And I ask for paper if I've forgotten them

LOL, I went to Wild Oats and bought two cloth bags this afternoon! Prompted by the thread about which is better/worse, paper or plastic.

I don't line the small garbage cans, just the large one in the kitchen. For that one I buy 30 gal. garbage bags. I empty the bathroom garbage cans into the kitchen garbage can, so I don't need to line the bathroom cans.

I do most of my shopping at Aldi where you have to bring a bag or buy them. I bought several of their bags and reuse them.

At Meijer I get the plastic bags and use them for garbage bags. If I end up with too many I give them to my friend's mom who sells produce to reuse.

Most stores where I live sell either canvas bags or reusable plastic bins. I throw the canvas bags through the wash periodically to keep them clean.

Occasionally I will get a few things in plastic to use to line the kitchen garbage bin - I cannot justify buying bags for the sole purpose of throwing them out.

For the past couple of years it seems like every conference dh goes to sends him home with a canvas bag, so we just add them to our grocery bag stash.

I have paid only $1 or $2 for all of teh bags I have bought - I wouldn't pay more than that.

I make it a discipline to hang teh bags on the doorknob as soon as I unpack them so that the next time I go outside I take them and drop them in the front seat of the car. I used to forget to bring them into the store with me, but it is becoming more and more of a habit.

I bought reusable grocery bags so I won't have to bring home lots of paper or plastic bags anymore.

I have a few of those grocery bags that they sell in the stores, but I always forget them I am waiting on some chico bags and think I will have better luck with them since they can be carried around so compact until ready to use
