ANTIOCH, Calif. - Kim Mayorga was confused when her 2-year-old started making funny faces and pushing away the apple juice he had ordered at Applebee's. The explanation came when she opened the lid of the sippy cup and was hit by the smell of tequila and Triple Sec.

She said the company has been very apologetic and offered free meals, but she added, "If they think I'm going back there, they're ridiculous."
no kidding!

doesn't say anything aboout the place being cited for serving a minor.
Poor kid and family.....but it does sound like an honest mistake. The restruant seems to handle it fairly. Taking care of the medical bills and such
I heard of the same thing a few months back... but it was a Long Island Iced Tea instead of apple juice.
That's absolutey horrible, even though it does appear to be an honest mistake. Also, it's awsome that Applebee's is taking responsiblity and reimbursing the family for their medical expenses, instead of being stand-offish like some companies are when these kinds of things happen. I'm glad the little boy is okay.
Sounds like an honest mistake, but Applebees really needs to container their apple juice VERY differently from their alcoholic beverages.
I've been tempted to do that occasionally...

KIDDING! Sheesh. Wine maybe, but not a margarita.

Yeah. It does sound like they were properly apologetic... but if they're that screwed up behind the bar, man, they have some problems.

Thats what I was thinking. If I'm not mistaken its kind of a generic looking juice bottle, isn't it?

What kind of morons put applejuice and liquor in almost identical bottles?

I'm glad the kid is okay.

sleepytime tea, over ice. Tell them it's a new flavor of kool-aid.

was it a margarita or margarita mix? Do margaritas at this eatery come already mixed in a bottle that looks like the apple juice bottle? sounds weird to me.
It really could have been an honest mistake. Behind the bar, all the juices and mixers are stored in pour bottles, usually not labeled, color coded, or labeled by hand. If the apple juice sits in the well right next to the marg mix, it could happen very, very easily.

I can't believe no one's up in arms about the kid getting nasty ole apple juice.

Exactly. When my husband and I use to sit at the bar (pre-kids) we could watch them mixing drinks. The juices are in those pourable bottles. Easy mistake to make.

Wow you are being kind of harsh. If it was poured at the bar, you have a busy bar tender, containors that look all the same mistakes will happen. But you don't have an adult to say my drink is made wrong you have a drunk kid

Thing is, I am hard pressed to think of a mixed drik that contains Apple Juice. Or anywhere on a typica restaurant menu apple juice appears, other than the kiddie menu. As TdJ noted, this has happened before.

It is incredibly unsafe to keep apple juice in the same area as alcohol and to be so cavalier about labelling and handling.

I disagree about it being unsafe or cavalier. From the article.

The apple juice and margarita mix were stored in identical plastic bottles, and the manager mistakenly grabbed the margarita container to pour the boy's drink
The manager was probably unfamiliar with organization behind the bar and didn't know the proper place for the apple juice, hence the mistake. The regular bartender would not have made that mistake. Premixing popular cocktails and mise en place are standard at my restaurant and every other place I've ever worked.

Apple juice is used in some specialty cocktails and, when served neat or on the rocks with a dash of angostora bitters, is a good stand-in for whiskey. It's popular among designated drivers at my restaurant.
