I'm wondering if anyone has experience with their toddler having surgery and/or having to stay at the hospital for several days. Our 16-month-old dd has heart surgery next Friday and will stay at the hospital for at least 5 days. I am planning on staying with her the entire time, but I'm still worried about how it will affect her attachment/bonding process (she was adopted a month ago). Do they keep kids fairly "out of it" after surgery or will she be aware of what is going on (and therefore mad!)? Did you find your toddler was closer to you because the other people/procedures were scary or did he/she seem to blame you for putting him/her through it?

Also, any advice on entertaining a toddler who has to rest and stay in bed? Dd isn't interested in TV at all, but luckily likes books. Any other ideas to keep her happy & occupied while in bed?

Thanks so much in advance!

My oldest has meningitis at 15 months and was in the hospital for a week THEN had to have a hernia surgery at 17 months. I stayed with him both times 100% of the time except for 2 showers then his dad was there.

I would pick up some new toys maybe some blocks, magna doodle, melissa and doug has some neet band in a box things ( xylophone thats wooden maroccas etc) maybe a new baby doll ( a special one that years from now you can say... yougot this in the hospital) also try new books and hand puppets .

Prayers and best wishes to a quick recovery for you little girl.
