What type of sling/carrier/wrap do you wear for a 27-pound 14-month old? He's too big for the Bjorn and the ring sling (unless I'm doing it wrong). Thanks in advance for any tips!

Yay i LOVE BWing questions!!!!

Ok so are you or have you been using a bjorn? EEEEK that has to kill you!

For bigger babies i would suggest:

Kanga XT, A Toddler Dream Carrier, or a 18 inch Olives and Applesauce. These are all SSCs (soft structured carriers...kinda like a bjorn but MUCH MUCH MUCH more comfy!)

I use an Angel Pack LX with my dd and i love it, the are a bit easier to get your hands on since they are sold at online stores, the ones that i mentioned above you can really only find them on a used carrier forum, or you need to get a custom slot. Frogmamas, has some Angle packs, and if you just google it you can find some other stores that carry them,

You could also try a Mei Favorite Toddler FBC. (btw she has layaway on her site
)

And there is always Ergo carriers, they are relatively easy to find, but they carry too low for my taste.

Anyways HTH!

Oh and wanted to add that my dd is 28lbs and 27 months and we are nowhere near stopping

I like wraps, and Storchenweige have been particularly recommended for toddlers.

Frogmama is great. I got my babyhawk from her. There is also a toddlerhawk if you like mei tais.

I wore my older kids in ring slings when they were toddlers. It wasn't comfy, but it was enough for me to appreciate what a great mama you are. I think you set some sort of a record with the bjorn!

Toddlerwearing is delightful with the right equipment. I love snuggling my fifteen month old all the way across town and get so annoyed by the negative comments.

My DD is about 26 pounds, and we still use the pouch sling quite a lot. I put her in the hip hold and sometimes on my back. But usually if she's on my back she's in the Ergo, which is fabulous for this use. I can comfortably carry her for a long time in the ERgo. With the sling, after about an hour my shoulder starts to hurt.

I still use the ring sling all the time for my 27 lb 15 mo and once in a while for my 37 lb 29 mo. Not that great with the older one, but still doable.

With DS1, I used a stretchy wrap until DS2 was born, about the same size you're talking about. It worked well but I couldn't deal with a wrap with a newborn nursing around the clock and I never got back to it. For back carries, I find the MT the best -- Ergo would probably work as well.

You've gotten some great advice. Just wanted to say my 2 yo is 30 something pounds and I can comfortably wear him in an Ergo, Beco and Babyhawk. I also have a AMC II that DH uses occasionally but it's too plain for me.

For that age, I like mei tais, wraps and ring slings.

eeks, anything is going to feel good after the Bjorn with a kid that size! for older/heavier babies you want either a larger-bodied mei tai like a Kozy or Toddlerhawk, or a SSC (soft structured carrier). My preference after a year of age is a SSC (though i do still use my Kozy occasionally).

As tinyblackdot mentioned there are lots of specialized SSC's out there for toddlers. I have an APLX which i quite like. i agree, Frogmama is a great place to buy, and she sometimes has returns and other one-offs for cheap so keep an eye on her clearance section! i got one of the production samples she was selling last year for a lot cheaper than a regular new APLX. i think it was maybe $75? Nana's Jetpak is another taller-bodied SSC and you can usually pick them up used for really cheap - i just got one on TBW for $35. it's pretty low-frills, and the regular size works great for petite folks, if you're more than about a size 12 you'll probably be happier with the larger size. the Babies Beyond Borders is also a less expensive option, i just got one and have only used it for a couple of days but i am really liking it so far. $85 including postage from the BBB website or from Heavenly Hold. Patapum also makes a toddler sized carrier. i tried one on once (it was a friend's) and it seemed pretty comfy. i used to have a baby sized Patapum that i quite liked, so i imagine the toddler ones are pretty decent, and they're not too pricey either.

I would love to try a Kanga XT or toddler Dream Carrier, but it definitely not in my budget right now, even buying used they were more than a new BBB. and there are a lot of good toddler-worthy carriers out there that are good quality and pretty reasonably priced.

Eek, ditch the Bjorn! It's no good for you or the little one.

I have a 15mo who's 27 lbs. and we use a Pikkolo for front carries, a Beco for back carries, and a Walking Rock Farm pouch for side carries. You can check out the Pikkolo and Beco here:

And the WRF here:

Wearing toddlers can be such a joy with the right carrier! Best of luck with whatever you decide.

My DS is the same age and size as yours. I carry him in my old style BabyHawk XT, my MOM Tai, and my Bebina wrap. I have a BB Slen shorty wrap on the way and I'm ordering an 18" O&A from the co-op going on right now. I do have a RS that I use for quick in and outs, like running a lot of quick errands. It's an UpMama hybrid. The shoulder is double layered, which helps support somewhat, I think.

I still wore my 16mo on my front in the wrap, but it was a lot of bulk and weight (imo) by that age...and I was never able to get a good handle of wearing him on my back in the wrap.
I made a mei-tai style carrier (I made it with buckles instead of tie straps, but same style) and carried him on my back in that, and it was GREAT!! I used that right up until he was about 22m and could walk fast enough to keep up with me (and by that age he really wanted to be walking).

Anyway, I agree that slings are better for lighter/smaller babies. For shorter jaunts I did wear him on my hip in the sling until he was about 22lbs, but yeah, that was starting to strain my back. It was all wrap after that, and by the 27ish lbs I was putting him on my back.
