My dd will be 18 months next week. She's been showing signs of control over her eliminations for quite a while now. She started staying dry through the night around 13 months. Then around 14 or 15 months would say "pee" and "poop," usually after she'd already gone. Then around 16 months she started saying "pee" and "poop" usually before she went.
Now she doesn't want to wear a diaper at all, but she won't go on the potty, either. Most of the time, she gives me enough warning that I can sneak a diaper on her when she says "pee" or "poop," and she'll just go in it. But yesterday, she came right over to me, and instead of telling me she had to go, she just peed right on my leg like a dog. She wants to be bare-bottomed all the time, but it's frustrating when she has accidents. She throws a fit now if I try to put a diaper on her at bedtime, so I've been letting her sleep with no bottoms on until morning, but I know I'm just asking for a bedwetting incident, which would not be fun in a family bed!
I just don't understand it. She used to love her soft cloth diapers and would never argue about wearing them, but now she thinks she only has to wear them when it's time to go. I haven't changed brands of diapers or detergent or altered my laundering method. She just wants to be in control, but I am not sure she's ready, because anytime I sit her on her potty, or ask her to go on the potty, even when I know she really needs to go, she'll just sit on it and pretend. She'll even go "psssss" and then shut the lid and say, "bye, pee" or "bye, poop," but she hasn't actually done anything. I think she thinks it's some sort of game.
How do I keep a diaper on her without being mean about it? Or how do I get her to understand that the potty is to pee and poop in not to just pretend? Anyone else deal with this frustrating in-between phase?
