For the past 4 years Ive gotten the Tofurkey but I now have the option to get the Unturkey. I don't really love the Tofurkey, so Im willing to get the Unturkey but it costs a lot more. Thoughts? (i dont want to make my own)

I like Unturkey better but it is pretty pricey. I could do w/o either of them, truth be told. It's not my favorite part of a Thanksgiving meal. If we have dinner w/our vegan friends we'll probably have one because they really like it but if it's just us this year then we might just skip it.

Good to know that you prefer the unturkey over the tofurkey. I love the taste of tofurkey, but it's so expensive that I've been experimenting with a homemade version for this year. I call it "JiveTurkey."<br><br>
Speaking of tofurkey stuff, if you're not into making your own gravy, and you can bear to pay the $$, the tofurkey brand giblet gravy is to die for!!! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/yummy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="yummy">

When I was a vegetarian I used to attend my family's traditional thanksgiving dinner- I'd simply not eat the turkey and fill up on the "side dishes." I never felt the need to bring a turkey substitute to the table- I had both homemade and canned cranberry sauce, "stuffing", squash casserole, baked white potatoes, baked yams, rolls and/or cornbread, and then apple and pumpkin pies for dessert. What else did I need?

unturkey is a fake turkey product -- you can find it in the freezer section of stores like whole foods.<br><br>

I'm too much of a protein-fiend to put up with side dishes alone. I also feel that it promotes a misconception among many meat eaters that vegetarians need nothing but side dishes. While I do adore mashed potatoes with gravy and mac & cheese, I just don't consider that a complete meal! My feeling is that side dishes should play a supporting role to a protein-rich main course, whether you're choosing a meat or a veggie-based Thanksgiving dinner.<br>
Just my 2¢ <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

When I was veg I was never into the meat substitutes. I know VT has a thanksgiving cookbook that has lots of great main dishes that are soy free. They have some great menu ideas and the like. We never tried any of the recipes given our circumstances presently, but it was certainly high on my list!

My ideal for a main dish for a nice meal would be a whole-food-based one made from scratch (a lentil loaf or bean stew or something like that). If you don't have time to do something like that, I'd recommend the Celebration Roast over either Tofurkey or Unturkey. It's seitan based with a delicious stuffing in the middle. Our co-op and Whole Foods carry them, and they come in small (serves 2-3) or large (serves 5-7). They are delicious with gravy.

I am not a big fan of Tofurkey. We had it last year and DD was kinda cranky all night and we guessed that might have been the cluprit in my BM. She was only a few weeks old then.

we've had both and i prefer the unturkey to tofurkey. but we normally get the tofurkey because its MUCH easier for us to find. the larger unturkey is more expensive than tofurkey, but at least you have left overs for a few days.

Another vegetarian who doesn't particularly care for the fake meat products. Oooohhh, I take that back, I do like the boca chikn patties. But I digress... no fake turkey for our family this year.
