Tonight, on KCTS...

About Us: Moyl

"David Bolnick is a traveling 'moyl' (ritual circumciser) who roams from family to family and community to community as he helps parents enter their sons into the Jewish community. The ceremonies are more than just the procedure of a circumcision; they are a continuation of an ancient tradition of welcoming a baby into the community. The baby's name is announced often followed by an oral history of the baby's namesake. The film delves into the more modern aspects of bris or ritual circumcision, from the jokes that have become part of the culture to the ritual side of corrective surgeries to fathers choosing not to delegate their religious responsibility and doing the 'cut' themselves."

If someone could record/TIVO this to DVD, that would be great.

Thanks so much. I've found a few others who get the channel and can record it, but your the first one that's sure she can get it onto a DVD, lol.

Canadians w/ either digital cable or satellite can get both east coast and west coast U.S. networks and I'm fortunate to have that option. I, too will record it on my DVD Recorder HD (hard drive) and later burn it on to disc for future viewings.
I've always seen it spelled mohel. Is "moyl" a new/alternative spelling?

I think it must be an alternative/variation...but that's how it's spelled in the program title. (And the mohel's website has the DVD for sale, and it's also spelled "Moyl" on the cover.)

Anyone else counting the minutes before this gets locked?

Not really, since we're not debating religion or religious circumcision at all.

Wow, sounds interesting. I would send some paypal to cover the disk and shipping if anyone wants to burn it for me...
If you want a copy I'm happy to do it. Just PM me and let me know or post here. The cost of the DVD is negligible, and shipping probably is cheap too. Unless a ton of people want one and it starts to add up, I'm happy to pay for that too. As long as you're fine with parcel post!
i saw the first part of it. The man performing the circs was sympathetic to the people who are anti circ (he doesn't say it, but he keeps repeating that he only agrees with circ depending on the intent of the parents)

Great first half, i fell asleep though.... been having insomnia and when my body said it was ok to sleep early last night, I took advantage.

I'm like that, too. lol I have the Whose Body, Whose Rights? video on VHS and w/ the magnificent invention of DVD recorders, burning it to DVD and mailing it to people makes it a breeze in terms of shipping costs. No need for those bulky, expensive-to-mail VHS tapes anymore. I fell asleep, but if it's ever repeated, I'll record it ('About Us: Moyl').
Also watched it, and it was interesting, disturbing, aggravating, and more. There where things that the mohel said which I totally agreed with, especially when he admitted that circumcision is painful, babies DO feel pain, etc.

The interview with Howie Siegel made me want to scream.

The mohel even asks bris attendants to sing/hum *loudly* when he makes the cut, to help calm the parents---but it's clear it's primarily to help drown out the sound of the cries.

The couple interviewed from Juno Alaska seemed reluctant. The father said that it would be too much of a burden on himself and his son to break a 4,000 year tradition...and explained that they probably wouldn't circ unless they were Jewish.

There was a segment all about jokes surrounding the bris, and everyone always to tell the mohel one he hasn't heard before. They even had footage of multiple stand up comedians. I found the whole concept of making light of the ritual/procedure really upsetting.

There's lots more I could say. I actually took detailed notes, but my computer crashed and I lost them. Perhaps we can discuss the film elsewhere after more of us have had an opportunity to watch it. Maybe the religion forum?

Anyway, my overall feeling after watching it was simply sad.

News and Current events is a debatable forum, but I'm not sure if it is acceptable being that religion is involved. Or maybe Television since it was a show.

They ruined my favorite bagel shop in Juneau.
Quite possibly the best bagels on the West Coast, but the Bris was in the little restaurant attached to the bagel shop (there is just an open door between them) and I could never eat there again knowing what went on next door.
Oh, same owners too.

I'm currently starting to burn DVDs. Please PM me your addy if you want one. I'll try to get them burned this weekend and mailed Monday if possible.

Oh, and I think any discussion of the religious aspects of the film will have to be in the spirituality forum.
