I have a quick question for you all and I hope I can get it out before Sam wakes up.
I am considering getting a sling for Samantha and I want to know if it is too late, and if not what kind will do her into toddlerhood and through a very cold winter with constant walking.
See, when she was a little baby I used a Snuggli for her. She very quickly got too heavy for me to use that thing all the time and I switched to the stroller. Well, lately I have been using the snuggli once or twice a day (I have to do 4 walks to and from Amy's school) and she loves it.
I would love to use a sling this winter instead of a sled but I am totaly lost about them. Is she too old to start? What kind would be good? Where the heck would I buy one since my lack of credit card makes on line shopping a no go?

What do you all think?

TIA

I've never used one myself, but I'm asking for a Baby Trekker for Christmas.

www.babytrekker.com

I was hoping my dh had gotten one for my bday. Turns out he's an idiot.
:

I have a Maya-style sling and love it, but he's getting heavy and grabby. I'd like the option of wearing him on my back (something I can't do with the sling due to mega boobage) and having his weight more evenly distributed.

She's definitely not too old for a sling! My babies are 8 months old also, and they love to be slung. We have a kissa-sling, which is a ring sling with a padded shoulder, but no padding anywhere else. I love it. We also have the Ergo which I think is great for longer walks since my boys are pretty heavy (20+ pounds).

I know that LLL sells the OTSBH slings (a padded ring sling that would work for a baby your dd's age). Are there any meetings in your area?

Also, there are many online retailers who will accept checks. I would just search around until you find one.

Hi, there is a lady in calgary that makes, and sells slings. She sells them online, but I think if you emailed her, she would take a check. I have one, and it is wonderful. She also has instructions on different positions to wear your baby with it. (It is a padded ring sling ). The website is: www.motheringbasics.com And since it's canadian, it's canadian prices

I wore my ds in his sling from day 3. At one yr we had worn it out and bought another and used it til he was 3 yo. So no, it's not too late. You're still in sling prime time.

Nowadays a lot of my friends have more than one, an OTSBH, a Maya, a backpack, for different uses, moods and to match what they are wearing.

Not all LLL groups sell slings. OTOH, ours sells OTSBHs and Mayas. Call around.

Hmmm, mabey I should have rephrased the "too late" part. I meant to ask if babies have trouble adjusting to a sling if they have not been in one until 7 1/2 months old. I suppose the snugli is kinda like a sling, or is it? To be honest I have never seen one in use.

erikanorth: Thank you for the Canadian link. Do you like her slings? Are they comfy?

chellemarie: Ohhhh, I like the look of those Trekkers, but owie they hurt the wallet! Maybe I could ask for one for Christmas... Anyhow, they retail localy so they may be a good bet. Actualy, they are even made in Manitoba, which is a very nice change!

Thank you all for the input so far. I think I just might get a sling this winter. Any ideas on one that would hold a bulky snow suit? It gets down to -40 and we still have to go outside so it needs to accomadate a lot of clothes!

TIA

are you in winnipeg?

because last time i was there i bought a fabulous sling from a store on corydon called ?earthmama or something. it is just a big swath of cotton jersey (very easy to make yourself - you can PM me if you want instructions), made by a sahm in manitoba. cheap too (~15-25$). but mainly great because the weight is distributed so evenly across your hips & shoulders. sort of like a low-budget didymos. all my mama friends here now have one and use them all the time, and you can wrap baby up UNDER your parka, etc, & she'll be so toasty.

if you have family with $$ and credit cards who want to buy you something, i also love my kangaroo korner fleece pouch - by far the most comfortable over the shoulder sling i've tried (and my boy is getting older now.. 20mo..) it should be great for my soon to be newborn, and i can so easily carry my son on my back. really good for the up-and-down stage you're daughter will enter soon enough.

i wouldn't worry about her adjusting, you can both adjust together. just focus on finding a sling that's comfortable and easy on your back. at her age my son loved getting danced to sleep in the wrap around sling, and loved the long walks.

good luck shopping!

Definitely not too late. I didn't start using a sling until my oldest son was around a year and he loved it. Now, I am slinging my youngest son and he loves it also. I just made my own. You can get a pattern from a couple of different websites. http://www.geocities.com/sling_a_ma_...tructions.html and http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/inde...aby/sling.html are a couple. Also, maywrap has one on their website. They aren't very hard to make. You will need to order rings from www.slingrings.com I am starting to make them for all my momma friends. HTH!

I agree...definitely not too late! I didn't start slinging with my first son till he was just over 4 months and continued till I was pregnant with my second! Some babies may find it difficult to adapt, but for the most part they seem to love it no matter what the age! ~~~GOOD LUCK~~~

Definitely not too late! I put my niece in a sling while babysitting her for the first time when she was 2 1/2 and she loved it! I use a Maya wrap, by the way.

MM, I do like the sling I have from motheringbasics....it's comfy and easy to use, but ds is only 3 months (but at least 16 lbs), so I can't comment on how comfy it is for an older babe. She was highly recommended by my midwife -- she told me they were the best slings with the longest life (can use until babe is older).

I also have the baby trekker (& a snugly....dh says I have too many carriers, and I still want more
)...the baby trekker is MUCH more comfy than the snugly, and it can adjust to fit over winter clothing, but it is quite expensive (although still in can. $$ which is nice.) If you have a big winter coat, you could put babe in the sling under your coat when it is very cold, but some babies want to see everything.

HTH, Erika
