OK, so tomorrow I have my first MW appointment. I'll be 9.5 weeks. Last time I was pregnant, I heard DS's HB at exactly 10 weeks at my first appointment. For some reason, my mom seems to think that 9.5 weeks is way too early for them to even check for a heartbeat with a doppler, and that they'll make me wait until I'm 12 weeks before trying. So, I'm just nervous that the MW won't try to find it tomorrow! Would it be out of line to ask her to? I've been living to hear this heartbeat!

Seems a little early to me, but it could be possible. I think that a lot of midwives don't try that early because they don't want to disappoint the mother if baby's not in the right position to make it possible. I'm sure they will try if you ask though.

Which would be worse for you, trying to hear the heartbeat and not being able to, or not trying at all?

For myself, I think I would get really nervous if we tried to hear it and couldn't, even if I knew that it was pretty early. I opted not to have my first appointment till I was almost 13 weeks specifically so that I would be sure of hearing a heartbeat at the appointment.

However, it sounds like you would really like to try. I think that you should definitely ask. I hope that the baby is in a good position so you can hear that wonderful sound!!

They got my first dd at 9-weeks which my OB said was the earliest he'd ever gotten one on doppler. Yesterday I had an appointment and the midwife said she'd try to get the hb but that at 10w4d it could still be too early to hear it. It took her 2 minutes or so but she did find it (whew!) and we got to hear it for a good minute or two. Such a sweet sound!

Talk to your midwife about it and tell her you'd like to try. She may discourage you because of what the PP said about which would be worse...trying and not hearing it or waiting to try.

My midwife came over the other night. She found it right away and I was 9w3d. I think it depends on the doppler, your size, the baby's position. There are so many factors. Just know that if you aren't able to hear it yet, that it's totally normal. GL!

I heard baby #2's hb at my 8 week and a bit appointment and this beans at home at about the same dateing. My OB tried to find it at my 10 week appointment , but couldn't, but b/c I can feel baby move, when I got home I was able to find it right away. I think it really depends on baby TBH, they do like to hide

I am so spoiled. My OB/MW uses a little hand held ultrasound thing to hear the heartbeat. So at nine weeks, I have already heard it twice. I think that many ultrasoudns can't be good, but I just can't imagine having the will power to turn down hearing the heartbeat I guess I still haven't heard my babies actual heartbeat, just a computer generated one. But it is still nice to know things are going well in there!

My m/w got it at 9.1 weeks. She said she would only do it if I was sure that I wouldn't freak out if I didn't hear it. I told her to go ahead and there it was. Love that sound!

With DD1 and DD2, I heard the hb that early. With this baby, I have a new Dr. (my old fantastic one retired, she was pretty young so good for her), my new Dr. said that at 11.5 weeks it was too early for her to hear the hb and she didn't check. I *almost* asked to try anyways, but didn't want to get disappointed (or her disappointed) if she couldn't find it. I go back in 3 weeks and I'll get to hear it then.

We tried at my last appt on monday. I was about 9 weeks 5 days give or take. My MW tried really hard but we didnt hear it. She almost heard it for a second in the background. What made it even harder is I have an artery right there (as most do) and the artery kept getting in the way with the thump thump thump. I didnt expect to hear it so its not a big deal.

We got it!!!!! The mw offered, and just forewarned me that we might not hear it this early, but still thought we had a good shot considering that I'm pretty thin these days (thanks m/s!!). Anyway, that little heart was going, going, going. 170bpm. what a sweet, sweet sound.

I couldn't hear mine at 11 weeks with my mw but went in for an ultrasound the following day and heard it loud and clear. It's such a great sound!
