I have a dentist appt tomorrow morning for my 17 month old ds but I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before?

Ds has a tooth that's been taking it's sweet time coming through -- for 7 weeks or so it's just been a big bubble under his gum causing him a lot of discomfort. I was starting to get very concerned and now just today I can see it coming through and it looks like a black jagged point!!!!!

He's never had a bottle, rarely drinks juice (and it's diluted when he does), rarely eats any sugar ...so I don't think it can be a cavitity. The dentist said he doesn't think so either.

But could it be some kind of infection? I'm so worried because ds is not used to exams or routines of any kind. We don't take him to a doctor or anything. I'm so worried of what this could be and what it could mean it terms of procedures. Any one has any insight??? HELP!

How much of it has come through?

My baby has had two molars that have looked like they were coming in black when it was just a tip of the tooth showing. Now they are all the way in and they are perfect. He had very irritable gums and they would bleed a little when he was teething, so I think the black was maybe just a little blood that congealed.

Dont know about the jagged look, but about the discoloration: A good friend of mine had what she was told was a birthmark on her tooth, it looked just like what you are describing, black like a cavity or some food stuck there. She knew for sure it wasnt a cavity, had it checked many times. She eventually had it "taken off", I imagine drilled and filled. Just a thought!

This is the explanation from my dh- a dentist. He says that anterior teeth have what are called mamelons which appear jagged. These get worn out over time and become not jagged, but should start out jagged. He also says that enamel is translucent and can appear grayish. It will magnify any blood in the area. DH says that it is most likely not decay because the tooth has been in a sterile environment up until now.

Try not to worry about any tests or proceedures just yet. If he is going to a pediatric dentist or a general dentist with a lot of experience with kids, he will be just fine. The dentist can sit knee to knee with you and lie your son across your laps. This works well as your son can see you and can get reassurance from your face. The last thing you want to do though is act nervous or upset. Your son will pick up on that and in turn get nervous or upset.

Obviously the pp above mine whose dh is a dentist knows more than me
, but my DS has been working on his molars for almost 3 months now, and at one point he had a large black area on his upper gum right over where the tooth was coming in. I was close to freaking out about it (and thought it was about to come through right away) but it turns out it was a blood blister. It seemed pretty painful to DS but then it went away completely. Sadly, the tooth has not come in yet, either, and that was weeks ago!
. Just thought I'd throw that out there as an idea...

My daughter's gums were very dark purple when her molars were coming in. When I noticed them for the first time I freaked out. They are called eruption cysts. Hopefully your problems is as minor as this..

You mamas are great! Thanks so much for the support and feedback!
Funny story...turns out the black jagged thing in his mouth was blueberry skin stuck to his incoming tooth!
:
: Thankfully, I discovered this before I took him to the dentist. What a relief!!!!!

Those pesky blueberries, causing trouble again... I just recently read a post from another mama, who was concerned about her DC's black poop. It was blueberries.

But, thanks for the thread - DD has a molar coming in, and she has what looks like a cyst on her gum. It's kind of gross and it has been there for a week. I have been worried about it and it's reassuring to hear about other DCs having similar things.
