What is a Transvaginal Ultrasound?

I am suppose to have one done tommarow morning.

Is this an external or an internal ultrasound?

What should I expect?

What exactly are they looking at and what are they looking for?

If I am pregnant can it be picked up this early? 8 DPO?

It is what it sounds like, lol. They have a wand that they insert in your vagina, instead of looking from the outside.

I had one during my last pg, very early on, because I was spotting. I think they are able to see more, earlier.

I dunno what they expect to see at 8 DPO, though...

Ah... the dildo cam.

It's painless... weird, but painless. It is the way they generally do ultrasounds in the early part of the first trimester. They insert a ultrasound wand into your vagina - they even put (what appears to be) a condom on it. Try not to laugh... it'll just make things more awkward.

I am sure doctors may do it for a variety of reasons. I had it done to confirm a pregnancy when I was about six weeks along or so. All they could see was a speck at that time... but it was the best speck I had ever seen in my life.
And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they also use TVUS to verify ovulation?

As weird as transvaginal ultrasounds are, they give a much better picture than ones on the outside of the lower abdomen - at least in early pregnancy. Also, to me they are more comfortable than all that hard pushing they do with the outside ultrasounds.

Good luck!

Would they be able to spot the Corpus Luteum that is made after the egg "pops" from the ovary during ovulation?

If I am not mistaken this Corpus Luteum stays alive to produce Progesterone to thicken the lining of the uterus and support a pregnancy untill the placenta develops and takes over?

In all my pregnancies, (9) of them, I have always had a transvaginal ultrasound, and the pregnancy was NEVER picked up before around 5 weeks or more. The sac can only be seen around 5 weeks and the heart beat usually around 6+ weeks. So, If you are only 6 dpo or ever 14dpo, they will NOT be able to see the pregnancy, but will be able to pick up the corpus luteum cyst that's left behind to do what the placenta will do once formed. HTH mama!!

yea this! with DS they could only see the implantation site at 6 weeks, no sac no nothing. just the implantation site looked whiter then the surrounding area. I dunno what they think they would see at 8dpo, im told implantation usually happens around 10dpo... but I guess anything is possible...but on your chart I dont see that you got a pos pg test, r u sure you are pg? why did they want to do an ultrasound if not?

Well I did have the ultrasound done today.

I asked her if she would be able to tell if I was pregnant and she said not untill I was 6 weeks along.

So I said well what about the corpus lutem left on my ovary, she said well it would be so small you would hardly be able to see it.

She did an external and internal ultrasound, she checked my kidneys, my uterus, and my ovaries.

My doctor had ordered the ultrasound to look for ovarian masses, (tumors, cyst, anything abnormal).

I won't know the results of the ultrasound untill next thursday when I see my doctor again.

It all depends on who is doing the ultrasound. A fertility specialist should be able to show you the corpus luteum. I find it strange that they would do an ultrasound at 8dpo. Usually, they wait for day2-3-4 of your cycle so they can get an antral follicule count while they are in there.

And, yes, they use condoms, not even a special kind or anything.

It doesn't hurt!

I am a phobic who has never even ONCE had my cervix checked or had a vaginal exam (seriously, and I am 28 and have had a baby) and I had one once (with my first pregnancy, that did not result in a living child) and I wasn't even scared.

So, it's not that bad- it is used in early pregnancy. Pregnancies that could not yet be detected with a regular ultrasound often can be with this kind. LMAO at dildo-cam!

The lady who took the ultrasound is just an ultrasound technician so they go from her to a radiologist to examine
and then from there they go to my doctor who is an endocrinologist.

I could get copies of the ultrasound images of my ovaries and then take them to a fertility specialist, but i'm not sure if it's worth that much trouble, lol.

At my last transvaginal ultrasound, I demanded that the tech buy me dinner first.
