Traveling while Potty learning??

500 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Nickarolaberry
Need some advice please!!

DS will be 3 in June, and is showing lots of interest in the potty. He loves to wear underwear, and has even pooped on the potty!!

We are going to Disney in about 3 weeks. Advice for the plane ride? Any suggestions for travel potty's?

He has been in cd's since birth, and I hate to put him in some sort of pull up or even a training dipe since he would be happier in undies.

Thanks!

My only advice is to make using new potties kind of a fun game, so they aren't scary.

Let's see what the potty looks like here? This is a new one that we haven't seen yet.

I followed my daughters lead with potty learning, so we did it a little while camping - using porta-johns and some while travelling. For us it was a many months process with steps forward and backward. So we used lots of new potties and things while out and about travelling. I know some people's children learn the potty in a day, week or a month, but it took a long time with us.

I would explain things and follow his lead.
What do you do when you go out of the house on a regular daily basis? Does he wear underpants or a diaper? I would suggest you follow the lead of your regular lives while on vacation. If he is wearing underpants for short trips out of the house but not longer ones, then pack the underpants for time in the hotel or other down times and keep him in diapers for the big days at Disney. If he is wearing underpants close to full time I would suggest you go with that and just bring a few changes of clothes with you each day. My DS knows that I only have a few changes with me at all times and that if he goes through the clean clothes and keeps having more accidents, that means he will get a diaper. I am not a walking laundromat. As for the airplane ride- I can remember sitting with DD when she was potty training on take off and landing when she had to go and we were not allowed up out of the seats. Take the next few weeks to figure out how long DS can hold his urge to go and if he can hold it for a while, then go with the underpants on the plane- if not, put him in diapers. Airplane rules are so strict. Just think if you were on the runway delayed, he had to go potty, and they wouldn't let you up. Good luck whatever you do.

I agree with what Julieshayna said. Use undies for the hotel, but then diapers for the big days at the park. He might be having so much fun that he'd forget to tell you to go potty. Also, make sure to visit the potty before every long ride. You don't want to be waiting for 45 minutes at the Dumbo ride, then finally at the front, and THEN he tells you he has to go potty! Frustrating for all!

Also, a Disney-specific suggestion: the toilets at Disney are self-flushing, and little kids aren't really big enough to cover the sensors to keep them from flushing while they potty. So pack some stickers in your diaper bag so you can put one over the sensor so it won't flush until he's done.

I've never flown with a pt'ed child, but I can tell you what my friend did. Her daughter was recently pt'ed, but put her in a pull-up for the flight. And it was a good thing she did, b/c they were delayed on the tarmac, couldn't get up to use the potty, and her DD had to go THEN. So the pull-up definitely came in useful!

That is a great idea - we were out to dinner last night and he "needed to go NOW" and was very reluctant because of the big ol toliet, and I was at a real loss of what to say. I just ordered a travel top thingie so he wont fall in; he did end up going last night, but after a bit of nudging.

We have been following his lead, I am not quite ready to put all my beautiful cloth away!! He is the one pushing this, and the timing scares me!!

Right now, he has been in underpants - but we havent gone more than a few miles in the car. Its been still cold up here, and we do tend to hibernate in the winter, LOL.

I think this is what we will do...I might just brake down and get some pull ups as he is great so far without having accidents, BUT, with all the excitement of Disney and all, I cant see going accident free. And he is flat out refusing a dipe now. And I dont want to force him since he is doing so well.

Airplane rules are so strict.
And I think this is what scares me into forcing a dipe on him...but, we are flying later at night, and he has been staying dry, but, I dont need a wet car seat in FL for a week either!!

Thanks!!!

THANK YOU!! Its the things like this I dont know that could make this trip very LONG...
Bring a potty for the car (we always keep one in the trunk), and get one of those kid sized potty seats that go over the grown-up ones for public toilets (worked fine for us on an 11 hour plane ride to Hawaii a few weeks ago!). Make sure he's accustomed to it before you go.

Yep, we'd always let the 3-year-old leave the lav before flushing. Good advice.
I bought this thing called the "on the go potty" http://www.kidsurplus.com/kal1730.html.

Unfortunately it uses disposable bags, which generally speaking I don't love. However, I must say it has been a lifesaver with my oldest (now 5). I keep it in the car, and it's pretty small so I can easily stick it in a bag and take it with us. When the public facilities are too gross or scary, I just find an out of the way place and use that. She has always been much more comfortable on it. Also that way I would have her go on it in the car before we would go in somewhere so she wouldn't be feeling so urgent.

Now that my 2 1/2 year old is beginning the PL'ing process, I'm going to pull it out again.
