I have to be in court in another state a little more than 2 1/2 weeks before my due date. It is not something that can be rescheduled until after the baby is born. The court date is set, I have to be there the day before and the day of court and will travel home that same day if conditions permit. Since it is so close to my edd I will not be able to fly and will have to drive instead. My concern is not the drive, I am a pretty good traveller and will take plenty of breaks to rest and strech my legs. I'll also have my mother with me. My huge concern is going into labor while I am away from home. I plan to bring the carseat along with diapers and clothes in case I deliver while out of town. Of course I don't want to deliver while I am gone, especially since dh is unable to go with me. I know y'all probably think I am nuts because most women are itching to deliver at 37 weeks but I am just wondering if there are any tips to stay pg longer. My dd was born a few days past her edd and ds was born the day before his, hopefully this one stays put until as close to his edd as possible.

eww... what an ugly situation. How long of a drive is it? I would make an appointment with my midwife (or ob) a week before and the day before the drive, and ask them to check and see if my cervix is ripening or there are any other signs of impending labor. And I would start researching my birthing options in that distant city. Call a facility that meets your criteria, make arrangements to deliver there if neccisary, and arrangements to see the facility the day you arrive so you know how to find it, etc.

Also, call around to airlines and ask about flying. They will make exceptions for Very Pregnant Women if there is a good reason, and I don't know their criteria for doing so. They just might consider a court date to be worthy. It may also depend on how long the flight would be. They may be more willing for a flight that will last 1.5 hours than one that would last 4.5 hours; Given that you're able to drive the distance, I assume it wouldn't be a tremendously long flight.

I don't know what your court date is for, but if it were me, I'd get a note from my midwife saying it wouldn't be ok for me to travel and I'd petition the judge with that.

That said, I personally also wouldn't worry too much about it. Did you just slam into labor with your first and have no warning signs? Or did you have some signs in the days before? I would say that if your body labors normally you're probably going to be getting signs about labor and if they came on while in another city, I'd probably just say screw it and head home.

Are you absolutely SURE that you have to do this court date? Meaning, you have checked, your midwife or doctor has written a letter to the court and you've been told you absolutely must show on that date? Court cases are continued for all sorts of stupid reasons. You have a good reason for a continuance, so I'm surprised that they are being that stubborn about it!

But, if you must go:
Have you checked with your insurance to assure that they will cover you if you are out of town and have to deliver at a non-affiliated facility? I am supposed to stay within 50 miles of a Kaiser facility in the last month of my pregnancy. They won't cover another hospital unless it is an emergency birth during that time.

I would make a list of hospitals on your route and in the town where you will be having your court date. Try to find out if those are part of your insurance plan.

If this is the court date I am thinking of, I understand why it is so important and you have to go (and good luck to you! I have been sending you good vibes).

I would try to talk to a birthing center in that town just to let them know that you will be there and to get a feel for it in case you do go into labor there.

I am filing for custody of my 8 year old daughter, who lives with her father in South Carolina. She is with me now on vacation and I am hoping that she does not have to go back to him. This is the earliest court date I could get and I am taking it. I suppose I could get another date after the baby is born but my daughter would have to return to a home where I feel she is being neglected.

Anyhow, thanks for all of the advice. I think I am going to drive anyway because I will hopefully be bringing dd back from South Carolina with me and maybe getting some stuff from her father's house. I haven't even been having BH contractions yet so hopefully it is a sign that he wants to stay put for as long as possible.

Not practical advice, but I would just visualize a closed cervix and a relaxed uterus and check in with the baby to let her/him know that you need the birthday to be after the court date. Drink lots of water on the trip and eat well too.
Good luck!

definitely check with the facilities where you'll be heading, is there a birth center? or will you have to go to a hospital? research the local hospitals and their policies, so at least you will know which one you want to go to should the need arise.

also, depending on how long the drive is, research all major hospitals along your route. again, if you can choose between a hospital that allows rooming-in and is pro-breastfeeding versus where they'll whisk baby away to the nursery for hours and tell you its not safe to have them in the bed with you....well, you'll want to know that ahead of time!!

best of luck for your court date!!
