Hi mamas -- with our upcoming move (from Durham to Cary) I am doing massive decluttering (or at least getting started). I am going to have tons of "good" stuff to donate -- lots of it I am sure I could get good $ for on eBay or craiglist but I have no time to deal with that. It's mainly adult clothes and household goods. With all the sizes I went through in the last 2 years I just have so much barely/never worn stuff as well as so many other random things. I am keeping kids stuff for another baby so I'm not looking to consign that stuff or anything. I shop at Goodwill and I know they take donations -- I know they are for-profit though and think the main service they provide is a cheap way for people to get stuff -- though their prices sure have gone up over the last 5-10 years. Anyway, does anyone know of a place to donate this stuff where the proceeds might go to a worthwhile cause? When I was in Chicago I drove a good distance to take a similar amount of "good" stuff to a humane society thrift store and felt good since they were so happy to get it since they don't get as many donations as Goodwill.

Thanks.

Back to sorting!

Goodwill is a non profit organization. The money made in the stores provides job training and life skills for adults with disibilities and disadvantages.

They (we) also provide job training for high schools students with disabilities. They get training and a paycheck. They just finished an enormous greenshouse and the students have the opportunity to learn about landscaping and horticulture.

Check out www.goodwillenc.org for more information.

Yes I work for Goodwill and I think the organization is awsome.

Thanks for the info. The Pennies for Change program does look really good.

As for Goodwill, don't know why I had the impression that I did then? I certainly buy a lot there so it's good to know I am supporting a good cause!

Well, I am hosting a yard sale this weekend where all the proceeds will go toward keeping a superWalMart out of Knightdale. We'd love donations. Feel free to pm me, or visit http://knightdalecare.com

Thanks for the replies -- I should have known there would be plenty of good choices. I had planned to take a load to Pennies for Change after our music class on Wednesday since it's close by. I'm sure I'll have more loads coming and will have to check out some of these others. The key is not to buy more than you donate (volume-wise).

MamaEli -- don't think I will be able to make it out to Knightdale before the 5th but good luck with the sale. I hope you don't end up with Walmart.

Club Nova Thrift Shop is also in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, and all of the proceeds go to "promote and provide opportunities for individuals with mental illness to lead meaningful and productive lives of their choice, in the community."
