I have a friend who is in a polyamorous relationship. She has 2 husbands. Right now the 3 of them are ttc. We were talking about ttc the other day. She said she had a better chance of ttc because she has 2 partners. I had thought she meant because she was having twice as much sex. She said it wasn't only that. She said that if you have 2 partners the sperm competes and you are more likely to conceive. I had never heard this. I found this interesting so I googled it to try to find some studies or information. I couldn't find anything. Has anyone heard of this? If so can you point me towards some info. online? What are your thoughts? Is this true or not?

That makes no sense. Sperm don't have brains or anything. All that having two husbands means is that the man with the more vigorous sperm is more likely to end up being the chromosome donor.

The competing involved is a mindless race, one sperm swims just as fast alone as in the company of millions.

Now, having a higher number of contenders does mean that it's far less likely that a damaged sperm'll make it to the finish line, so there might be less chances for chromosomal mutations.

If multiple males did anything for helping conception besides upping the sperm count, we wouldn't see so many species with mating groups of one male and many females.

I agree- the competition thing is silly. More good sperm faster, yeah. I know I've read a lot of TTC advice that says to only try every other day so that sperm has a chance to build up... well with two guys you could still erm... have deposits every day

It actually is not silly...this exists in the animal world...and in turn in the human one as well...

when men have competition the produce more and more effective sperm...I have seen several studies to this effect when I was studying bio in college

Well, one portion of semen paves the way for the other. It makes the environment more hospitable to sperm.

There is research that shows that men provide more sperm if there is a chance the woman has been with another man - an absence, like a business trip makes the man produce more semen and more sperm per millileter, for more sperm total.

Actually there was a study done that showed if a woman had sex with more than one partner then the sperm will actually attack and kill the other mans sperm. That is what some sperms job is actually. It was a very interesting study. I saw it on tv on discovery it has been awhile tho.

Most of those sperm have no chance of getting anywhere near the egg, many of the sperm are incapable of fertilizing an egg. They are blockers or killers.

Most sperm has no chance of fertilizing an egg and it doesn't even try. Egg getting sperm are an elite corps within a vast army (navy? whatever) with different functions. Alongside the egg getters are killer sperm who do not try to get to the egg but instead exist for the sole purpose of killing foreign sperm, sperm from any other man. Also in the same army are vast numbers of sluggishly swimming blockers, sperm whose function is to hinder the progress of egg getter and killer sperm of other men. Most sperm are there to fight, to make war not babies.

Got the quote from another site and here is what wiki has to say about it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sperm_competition

I did not read this before I posted it. I meant to say when two men compete not when sperm compete. She said they make more sperm. Well I do know that women can carry twins that have two different fathers, and it's probably more common than we know. If a woman has ovulated 2 eggs and has sex with 2 men within 24 hours or something like that. They're discovering it more with the advent of DNA testing.
As far as more or less chance of getting pregnant, I'm assuming it depends more on your own and your partner(s) fertility factors than number of partners. I conceived the first time of "trying" with charting, some women it takes a year or more.

Which begs the question, is one cause of infertility a man with too many fighter sperm and not enough lover sperm?

I saw a study recently that concluded that watching porn before BD increased your cvhances of conception because something chemically happened in the male to make his sperm more aggressive, because he just saw other people "procreating" andtherefore his survival instincts or whatever were on overdrive....something like that!

ANd not just the best title, but now also a link to a page titled, "Sperm Competition"! I'm picturing them all in their speedos and goggles lined up at the starting blocks at the pool.

Or do you think it would be like cage fighting? No holds barred?

anyone know...do the blocker sperm just block another mans sperm or all sperm. What I mean is... If you bd and then bd again do the blockers try to stop the new sperm from coming through? Do they just block them by being in the way? Just curious, I couldn't find any information on it.
