Hi mamas - I need a bit of reassurance - I do believe that my 28month old dd is starting to get her 2 year molars...here is why:

-last week she had a cold, low grade fever and crummy sleep, I took her to the doc thinking it was an ear infection starting; she confirmed a minor ear infection, gave us antibiotics and we just finished the last dose of the course today. She seemed to be getting better until...

-yesterday daycare called me at 10:30 saying she has a pretty high fever and is miserable.

-for the past week or so (since getting sick last week) she has been extremely irritable, not herself at all, screeching at everything, drooling a lot, sleeping a lot, not eating much (normally she is a HUGE eater), hands in her mouth all the time (also not normal as she is quite tidy and doesn't like having goopy hands)

-since picking her up yesterday her fever has been up and down - as high as 103 in her right ear at one point but always significantly lower temp in her left ear.

-she was up ALL NIGHT last night from 2:30am on - I am not sure whose child this is!

I am waiting for a callback from a nurse at our physicians office, but looking for some reassurance.

Is it normal for one ear to be a whole lot hotter if a tooth is coming in on that side? She won't let me put my fingers in her mouth but I got a peek with a flashlight and I think I saw a white bump emerging on the top right. I am just concerned that maybe her ear infection also didn't go away with the course of antibiotics...

experienced mamas - does this sound like just teething to you, or more that that?

I don't know.

103 sounds a little high to be teething. I know its not unheard of be teething fevers are usually low grade.

My DD is doing what your DD is doing right now; high fever(102-104), excessive drooling, disrupted sleep, fussy & irritable, etc.

I figured she just had a virus and it would subside.

Then I was poking around her mouth to see if was her teeth(which are coming in, wouldn't you know it!) and what do I see but some blisters on her tongue in the insides of her cheeks. I know exactly what this is now because we went through this last year; Coxsackie(of the Herpangina variety, sounds great, right?)

I'm guessing your DD just caught a virus with her immune system down from her cold.

From what I understand, teething may or may not cause a low-grade fever, but a fever of 103 is almost for sure not teething. Sounds like a virus or something. Poor kid. My 15 month had a virus a month or so ago that made him utterly miserable. Like your babe, he was cutting molars on top of it.

my 23 months old was never sick ... until 2 and half months ago when she got 4 pre molars out = three bouts of very frequent night waking, each time with major inflammation of the throat lining and eventually middle ear infection ....

, two nights ago it was some of the canines coming out (= woke up 6 -7 times a night AGAIN)

so that's her 4 th ear infection in less than 3 months, 3rd course of antibiotics/anti-infalmatory suppositories etc ...

can't say about the fever but just teething CAN be rather painful
so if on top, there are other issues ....

Thanks for your replies - you were right, it is teething but also her ear infection from last week didn't clear up so she is now on another family of antibiotics for a week. Poor kid - I hate to have her on antibiotics again.
