my dd just turned 2 on may 31. she's been flakey about her nap lately (one nap in the afternoon around 1:00 or 2:00pm). usually once a week she'll skip it entirely. nothing i can do will get her to sleep. i'm asking today because we just had an hour long ordeal trying to get her down. she finally fell asleep around 3pm in the car. this is becoming more and more common.

my question is -- when do toddlers give up napping? i'm not ready to have her not take her afternoon nap! yikes. she falls asleep rubbing my finger at bedtime and for naps.

My DD will skip her nap 1-2 times a week also. I actually like it better when she does because she is out at 7 and sleeps til 7! How is your DD when she doesn't nap? If she's cranky that's an indication that she still needs her nap.

Our son is also starting to go through this phase. He used to nap for 3 hours each day (like clockwork!!). Now, if he will nap for an hour I consider myself lucky. He does skip a nap usually once or twice a week. But on those days, he does go to bed earlier and seems to sleep that much longer at night.

My 32 month old stopped napping altogether about two months ago. She napped regularly up till about 28 months, then started napping 3-4 times a week, then just stopped! Now, if she does take a nap (which happens once every few weeks!), bedtime that evening is very difficult, and much later than usual. I was pulling my hair out at first - I got SO MUCH done during naptime!!! But now she is in bed by about 7:30, regularly sleeps until 8:30 the following morning, and I am adjusting. We do a "quiet time" when we are at home in the afternoon - she stays in her bedroom or her "reading corner" for 45 minutes to an hour, playing independently and mostly quietly. She enjoys it, and it gives me a chance to do the things that are difficult to get done with her "help". Good luck!!

DS will be three next month and I would say that of a 7 day week he probably skips...hmmm, maybe 3 naps. I noticed it more now that it is summer.
no rhyme or reason why some days and not others..

Hate to say it but my eldest two were both done napping, other then when sick or overtired, by the time they were two. I am hoping my youngest keeps hers for a little longer but I am not holding my breathe.

What realy helps when they stop napping is to have a quiet time/recharge period in the middle of the day. Gives you some quiet and lets them re-group. Try a sooting music tape and letting them colour or look at books or something simular.

DD is 31 months and has just given up naps this weekend, which has been great. Now instead of going to bed at 10-10:30 (after 30-45 minutes of trying), she's asleep by 8:30 after only a few minutes (DH and I actually watched a movie this weekend!). I hope she doesn't go back to napping!
